ABOUT BICOL INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Bicol International Airport, also referred by some sources as Southern Luzon International Airport, is a major international airport in the Bicol Region, serving the vicinity of Legazpi, the capital city of Albay and the regional center of Bicol Region, in the Philippines. The airport still has the IATA code of the old Legazpi Airport, despite being located in nearby Daraga.

BIA Terminal

The Construction of BIA

Dubbed as the Philippines' "Most Scenic Gateway", the airport is located in Daraga, an adjacent municipality of Legazpi. The ₱4.7 billion project is on a 200-hectare plateau 15 kilometers from Mayon Volcano. It replaced the old Legazpi Airport, which is only 2 to 3 kilometers from the BIA.

First planned in 1996 with initial construction beginning in 2008, the construction was repeatedly delayed until the airport was inaugurated and opened on October 7, 2021. It is expected to handle an estimated 2.2 million passengers every year.

The airport terminal, which was part of Package 2B for the project, was built and handled by E.M. Cuerpo construction. It has two levels and features self-service check-in kiosks aside from the check-in counters, two airbridges, and a lounge at the airport lobby.

What to Expect at BIA Terminal

The iconic Mayon Volcano serves as a backdrop for the airport which is located in Brgy, Alobo, Daraga, Albay. Vast tracts of farmlands surround the place.

Inside the terminal, passengers can tap the self-service kiosks for their check-ins and baggage handling. These allow faster processing. These are also useful during the pandemic as they limit face-to-face interactions.

The said advancements are similar to those included in the new terminal of the Clark International Airport. The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines hired the same service provider after all.

Up to 2 million passengers per year are predicted to use the newly opened airport. In the meantime though, Bicol International Airport flights are exclusive to domestic travel.

What to Do Upon Check-in

Upon reaching the check-in phase, it's crucial to ensure you have all the necessary items with you. Here's a step-by-step guide to facilitate the process:

Pay the Travel Tax: Ideally, the travel tax and departure fee are included in your ticket; however, it's prudent to double-check. If uncertain, proceed with check-in first. The check-in agent will inform you if you need to settle the tax separately, which amounts to P1,620 per person.

Check-In: Present your Departure Card, Travel Tax receipt, printed ticket, and passport to the check-in agent. Ensure any checked baggage has locks. The agent will issue your boarding pass upon completion.

Acquire Immigration Form: Obtain an Immigration Form, also known as a Departure Card. These forms are typically available at the check-in counter; if not, they can be obtained at the Immigration Area. Guards may verify your boarding pass before entry. Complete one form per person, providing the exact address of your hotel.

Proceed to Immigration Booths: Philippine passport-holders have separate queues from foreigners, so ensure you join the appropriate line. Present your passport to the Immigration Officer when it's your turn, who may or may not have additional inquiries.

Final Security Check: Undergo the final security screening. Remove all electronic devices and metal items from your person, including belts and coins, following instructions given. Shoes should be removed only if instructed.

Pre-Departure Area: After completing the final security check, proceed to the Pre-Departure Area. Check your boarding pass for the designated gate. Once there, await the boarding call.

By following these steps, you'll streamline the check-in process and prepare for a smooth departure from the airport.
