Back in 2016, I had the chance to visit one of Camiguin’s most underrated yet breathtaking destinations—Mantigue Island, also known as Magsaysay Island. 



Located off the coast of Mahinog, this small, forested island surrounded by white sand and turquoise waters became one of the highlights of my Camiguin adventure.

What to Expect

During my visit, the charm of Mantigue lay in its raw, quiet beauty. The island is divided into two main parts: one side has a white sand beach perfect for swimming and sunbathing, and the other is a protected marine sanctuary ideal for snorkeling and diving.

A short trail also leads you into a miniature forest park, giving the island a peaceful, eco-tourism vibe.

Today, the local government has maintained the island’s eco-friendly policies while offering more organized activities for travelers.

How to Get There


From Benoni Port


Take a habal-habal (motorbike) or multi-cab to Mahinog Wharf (10–15 mins, around ₱20–₱30)

Rent a boat from Mahinog Port to Mantigue Island

Jump-off to Mantigue Island

From Mambajao (Camiguin capital town)

Travel to Mahinog Port via habal-habal or multicab (30–40 mins, ₱100–₱150 depending on negotiation)

Proceed to Mantigue via boat


From Catarman

Head to Mahinog Port (approx. 45 mins, ₱150–₱200)

Mantigue Island Travel Guide: Promoting Eco-Tourism in Camiguin


The Bura Soda Water Park stood out as a unique and refreshing experience to me. Nestled in the lush landscapes of Catarman, this natural spring offers visitors a chance to swim in waters that are said to have a slight soda-like taste, a rarity in the Philippines.

How to Get There


From Mambajao (Camiguin's Capital)


By Scooter: Renting a scooter is a popular choice, taking approximately 25 minutes to reach the park.

By Tricycle: Hiring a tricycle costs around ₱100–₱150 and takes about 25 minutes.

By Shared Van: Shared vans are available for ₱40–₱50 per person.


From Benoni Port

Travel towards Catarman via the main road, then follow signs leading to Bura Soda Water Park. The journey offers scenic views of Camiguin's lush landscapes.

BURA SODA WATER PARK: Camiguin Guide to Sparkling Spring


Back in 2016, my friends (Team Basti) and I, embarked on an unforgettable 2 days and 1 night trip to the enchanting island of Camiguin.



It was part of our Northern Mindanao tour which also included Cagayan de Oro, Iligan City, and Bukidnon.

Camiguin immediately reminded me of Siquijor Island, which I visited in 2014. Both islands radiate an untouched, serene beauty — a perfect mix of pristine beaches, a laid-back island vibe, and an overwhelming presence of lush nature.

They aren't overly commercialized, allowing you to truly connect with the environment, explore untouched waters, and enjoy the simplicity of island life at its finest.

What is Camiguin Famous For?


Camiguin is known as the "Island Born of Fire" because it was formed by volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. It has seven volcanoes, including the active Mount Hibok-Hibok.

Camiguin holds the record for having the most number of volcanoes per square kilometer in the world.

It's also famous for natural springs, waterfalls, heritage sites, and White Island, a stunning sandbar.

Plus, Camiguin is home to historical landmarks like the Sunken Cemetery, submerged during a volcanic eruption in the 1870s.

The annual Lanzones Festival every October is a must-experience, celebrating the island’s sweet lanzones fruit.

Things to Remember Before Going to Camiguin


Cash is king: Always bring enough cash as ATMs are limited.

Rent a multicab or motorbike: It’s the best way to tour the island at your own pace.

Respect nature and locals: Camiguin remains peaceful because of the respect between tourists and locals.

Environmental fees: Some attractions require small environmental or entrance fees.

Weather check: Although it's generally sunny, typhoons can affect ferry trips.

Best Time to Visit


March to May (Summer) for clear skies and smooth ferry rides.

October if you want to witness the colorful Lanzones Festival.

Avoid visiting during the rainy season (June to September) due to unpredictable seas.



How to Get to Camiguin from Manila


Fly from Manila (NAIA) to Laguindingan Airport (CDO) – several airlines have daily direct flights (1.5 hours).

Touch down Laguindingan Airport

From Laguindingan Airport, travel by land to Balingoan Port (around 2 to 2.5 hours by bus or van).

At Balingoan Ferry Terminal, take a ferry to Benoni Port in Mahinog, Camiguin (travel time: about 1 hour).

Ferry Fare: Around ₱200–₱250 per person (one way) as of latest rates.

Getting Around Camiguin

Getting around Camiguin Island is quite easy and fun because the island is small and scenic! Here are the main ways you can travel around:


Motorbike/Scooter Rental


Most popular option. You can rent a motorbike or scooter for around ₱400 to ₱600 per day.

It’s the best way if you want flexibility to visit places like White Island, Katibawasan Falls, Sunken Cemetery, and Tuasan Falls at your own pace.

Make sure you have a driver’s license (some rentals check).


Multicab Rental


A multicab is a small jeepney-like vehicle that you can hire privately.

Good for groups or families who want a guided trip around the island.

Rates are around ₱1,500 to ₱2,500 for a full-day tour depending on the destinations.


Habal-Habal (Motorcycle Taxi)


You can ride on the back of a motorcycle operated by a local driver.

Ideal for solo travelers or couples who don’t want to drive.

Rates are negotiable, often starting around ₱500 to ₱1,000 for day tours.

Tricycle


You can use tricycles for short distances, like getting from your resort to restaurants or the port. 

Not ideal for island hopping or long trips because it can be slow and pricier for longer rides.


Car Rental


If you prefer more comfort, some resorts or local operators offer car rentals.

Great if you’re traveling with family, especially if it rains.


Tour Packages


Some hotels and tour operators offer pre-arranged Camiguin day tours that cover major sites with a guide.

Prices vary but often start around ₱1,500 to ₱2,000 per person, including entrance fees and lunch.

Tip: The Camiguin Circumferential Road completely circles the island and is only about 64 km long, so you can do a “full loop” in half a day if you don’t stop too much!

1. Mantigue Island

A small, forested island surrounded by white sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters — perfect for snorkeling and relaxing.

There’s a protected marine sanctuary here too where you can see colorful corals and fishes.

Boats are available from 6am. Last trip is at 2pm (maximum 3 hours per visit)


2. Sto. Niño Cold Spring Resort (Catarman)

After the beach, we cooled off in this natural spring with refreshing, icy waters. The pools are huge, clean, and surrounded by nature, perfect for a hot day.

3. Tuasan Falls (Catarman)

A short walk through nature led us to Tuasan Falls, a stunning cascade with a strong, cold flow of water. The atmosphere was peaceful and we even had the place almost to ourselves.

4. Bura Soda Water Park (Catarman)

Imagine drinking natural soda water straight from the spring! At Bura Soda Water Park, you can swim and also taste the slightly sweet natural spring water that has a soda-like fizz.

5. Ruins of the Old Spanish Church of Bonbon (Gui-ob Church Ruins)

A hauntingly beautiful remnant of Camiguin’s Spanish past, these ruins were left standing after a volcanic eruption. You can walk around the old stone walls and imagine the history it witnessed.

6. Sunken Cemetery

Marked by a huge cross rising from the sea, this iconic site symbolizes the cemetery that sank after Mount Vulcan erupted in the 1870s.

You can take a boat to the cross or view it from the shore during sunset — which is breathtaking!

7. White Island (Mambajao)

No trip to Camiguin is complete without visiting this white sandbar that disappears during high tide.

It offers a panoramic view of Mount Hibok-Hibok and the sea — perfect for photos and swimming.

8. Vjandep Bakeshop (Mambajao Town Proper)

Before leaving Camiguin, we stopped by Vjandep to buy the island’s signature delicacy: Pastel — a soft bun filled with sweet yema (custard). It’s the perfect pasalubong!

Katibawasan Falls: A 70-meter-high waterfall cascading into a beautiful rock pool.

Walkway to the Old Volcano: Stations of the Cross trail leading up the slope of an old volcano.

Giant Clam Sanctuary: Educational tour with giant live clams and snorkeling activities.

Tour Packages: You can book a Camiguin Island Day Tour for around ₱2,800 to ₱3,300 for two people. This usually includes:

  • Multicab service

Accommodation: Budget rooms usually accommodate 2 people already (queen or twin beds).

Meals: Eating at local carinderias is cheaper. Mid-range restaurants will cost more.

Ferry Fare: Paid individually, but you can save if you split costs like van rentals from CDO to Balingoan.
