The tourism industry in Sorsogon is optimistic about recovering from the economic slump after health authorities downgraded the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) alert status to Level 2, resulting in eased restrictions and the opening of more establishments.

In an interview on Tuesday, Bobby Gigantone, chief of the Sorsogon Provincial Tourism Office (SPTO), said they have reopened the "butanding" or whale shark interaction in Donsol town following a multi-sectoral meeting on the setting up of guidelines and protocols that would ensure the safety of both the tourists and locals.

Under Alert Level 2, indoor establishments are allowed to have a 50-percent capacity while outdoor areas may have a 70-percent capacity.

The tourism industry of Donsol has suffered huge economic losses resulting from the pandemic due to closed establishments and unemployment of hundreds of workers.

Donsol Tourism Office (DTO) data showed the pre-pandemic edition of the Butanding Festival in 2019 generated a total of PHP448 million in gross revenues, of which PHP75 million went to the community, PHP3.5 million went to the local government unit (LGU) coffers, and the rest was spent for national promotions and tourism marketing activities.

The DTO data also showed 13,000 tourist arrivals in the same year.

"With the permanent and temporary closure of tourist establishments such as hotels, resorts, restaurants, hundreds of millions in revenue were lost and hundreds of workers lost their jobs," Gigantone said.

The town's whale shark interaction project is a collaborative undertaking between the LGU, the Department of Tourism (DOT), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Philippines, a joint commitment for a sustainable and balanced eco-tourism program.

Sorsogon Gov. Francis Escudero, in a statement, said the reopening of the tourism sites would help the industry and community, particularly its workers to bounce back from the slump.

He said the province will soon also open other tourist destinations including the Bulusan Natural Park.

Meanwhile, Herbie Aguas, DOT regional director, in a phone interview, said the pandemic has hurt the tourism industry in the region for the past two years, with PHP10 billion in revenues already lost.

"It will take two to three years for the industry to gradually recover and for the government to pour in fiscal stimulus to assist in the recovery plan," Aguas said.

He also said the pandemic taught some industry stakeholders to find alternative sources of income such as engaging in agri-tourism.

In Albay, opened were the Aguas Farm in Sto. Domingo, Albay Farmer’s Bounty Village, Elmiro De Shei Integrated Farm, and Solong Eco Park and Tours, all in Camalig; and Villa Miranda Farm and Resorts in Libon.

In Sorsogon, now open to visitors are the Balay Buhay sa Uma Bee Farm in Bulusan and Barcelona Agrihope Tourism Farm in Barcelona.

Why Is It Called Kalanggaman Island? – Origin and History

Kalanggaman Island is located within Palompon which is a municipality on the west side of Ormoc City in Leyte. A bird’s-eye view of the island reveals that it actually resembles the shape of a bird. This is where the island got its name since the word ‘bird’ is ‘langgam’ in the local dialect.

It used to be known as a mysterious and enchanting place that not a lot of people want to visit due to fear of encountering mystical entities. Best Time To Visit Kalanggaman Island

Since the Philippines has two seasons which are summer and rainy, the best time to visit Kalanggaman Island is during the dry season. The dry months are February, March, April, and May.

You can still visit the island from October to January if the weather’s good and there are no typhoons. Try to avoid scheduling your trip during the rainy season from July to September.

It can also get crowded during long weekends, holy week, and other national holidays. If you don’t like large crowds, it’s best to avoid visiting the island during those days.

It’s a different case for DIY trips. Although there aren’t any restaurants in Kalanggaman Island yet, you won’t get hungry while exploring this place. There are several sari-sari stores around the island that can cook short orders for you.

If you want to cook during your stay, you can buy fresh catch from the market before going to the island. There are wooden tables and grilling stations that you can use for free.

  • From Palompon, go to the Eco-Tourism Office.
  • Register and rent a boat going to Kalanggaman Island.

From Tacloban

  • Fly from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte.
  • Once you’ve arrived in Tacloban, you have to ride a tricycle (Php 150) going to Duptours or Van Vans Terminal.
  • Ride a van (Php 170) going to Palompon, Leyte. The trip lasts for 3-4 hours.
  • Once you’re in Palompon, go to the Eco-Tourism Office. It’s located in the Freedom Park beside the Town Hall. You can ride a pedicab but it’s also near enough to just walk.
  • You can register and reserve a boat going to Kalanggaman Island at the Tourism Office.
  • The travel time from Palompon to Kalanggaman Island is roughly 1 hour.

From Cebu

From Cebu, you can reach Kalanggaman Island through Cebu City or Bogo City.

  • From Cebu City
  • From Cebu City, purchase a ticket going to Palompon, Leyte, at Pier 1 Cokaliong office.
  • The fare is around Php 310 and the duration of the trip is around 5 ½ hours.
  • Upon arrival at Palompon, Leyte, take a pedicab or walk towards the Eco-Tourism Office.
  • Register and then reserve a boat going to Kalanggaman Island.

  • Get off at Palompon, Leyte.
  • Walk or ride a pedicab going to the Eco-Tourism Office near the Town Hall.
  • Register and reserve a boat going to Kalanggaman Island. Travel time to the island is around an hour.

From Malapascua

  • At Malapascua, you can add a side trip to Kalanggaman Island.
  • Day tours to the island are available at Malapascua.
  • From Malapascua, there are three trips going to Kalanggaman Island daily.
  • You can coordinate with your hotel, resort, or tour provider if you want to add a side trip to the island.
  • The boat ride from Malapascua to Kalanggaman Island is around 1 ½ hour to 2 hours.
  • It must be noted that this route will be more expensive than the usual route (Palompon to Kalanggaman Island).

Tents can be rented for P250 (2 pax) or P300 (4 pax) per night. There’s a P200 deposit and you’ll be asked to present one of your valid IDs. You can call their customer service number at 0998-999-4276.

The City of Sipalay in Negros Occidental has been declared the Kite Tourism Capital of the Philippines during the staging of its 8th Burangoy Kite Festival over the weekend.



The plaque, which was conferred by the Kite Association of the Philippines (KAP) headed by its president Orlando Onkingko, was turned over by Supervising Tourism Officer Jerick Lacson to Mayor Maria Gina Lizares at the Government Center on Monday.

“The KAP confers to the City of Sipalay the title ‘Kite Tourism Capital of the Philippines’ in grateful recognition for the enduring commitment in promoting the traditional Filipino kite culture as an annual tourism activity,” the plaque dated March 31, 2022 read.

The declaration is an affirmation of the city’s efforts in promoting sustainable tourism by showcasing the kite festival as a family-friendly activity, kite flying as an eco-friendly sport, and kite making as a venue to promote local arts and culture.



“Most importantly, the kite itself is our symbol of hope to soar high and recover from the impacts of the Covid-19 (coronavirus disease) pandemic and Typhoon Odette,” he said.

Lacson added that the latest recognition received by the city serves as a challenge for stakeholders “to strive, to innovate, to be better, and to improve” Sipalay’s image and quality as a tourist destination.

This year’s Burangoy Kite Festival, which was among the activities alongside the city’s 21st Charter Anniversary, was the first after it was suspended for two years due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The kite flying exhibitions were conducted from March 30 to April 3 while the actual competition was held on March 31 at the Poblacion beach.

For the second time, the festival showcased colorful and unique kites made of various materials except for plastic in support of the local government’s “no plastic policy”.



The annual Sipalay kite festival is the grand winner in the Best Tourism Event (Sports) City Category of the 2018 Pearl Awards organized by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines and the Department of Tourism.

Its official name “Burangoy” was coined from the words “burador” or kite, and “barongoy”, a local term for flying fish.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) launches the second phase of the Save Our Spots (SOS) campaign titled, “Keep the Fun Going”, to encourage tourists to practice eco-friendly travels.

The campaign builds on the gains of the SOS phase one that was launched in 2019 to educate travelers about becoming responsible tourists. “Keep the Fun Going” aims not only to educate but also motivate travelers to take part in sustainable tourism practices, mainly through gamified challenges.

“The DOT has been integrating sustainable tourism principles in its projects, programs and policies, even involving tourists to be part of these efforts. Through the SOS campaign, we aim to raise awareness about responsible travel and emphasize that every small act goes a long way to ensure that future generations will continue to benefit from and enjoy nature’s abundance,” said Tourism Secretary Berna Romulo-Puyat.

The Philippines is home to some of the world’s richest ecosystems and diverse species, which are facing both climate change and human threats, such as overtourism and neglect of the environment.


To inspire more tourists to practice sustainable travel, the campaign will highlight a gamified experience featuring four eco-friendly ways to travel. The challenges will be demonstrated through collaboration with local key influencers, after which, the public will be enjoined to accomplish at least two of the four activities, which are:

  • The “Certified Foot Soldier Challenge” that encourages travelers to walk, hike, or bike more often;
  • The “Zero-Waste Warrior”, which inspires travelers to reduce waste by avoiding single-use plastics and always bringing reusable water bottles, utensils, and shopping bags;
  • The “resTOURism Advocate Challenge” that encourages tourists to volunteer in restoration efforts of communities, such as planting activities, clean-up drives, and wildlife preservation; and,
  • The “Eco-Staycationer Challenge” that motivates tourists to book in eco-friendly accommodations, such as local homestays or ANAHAW-awardee hotels that take action to promote sustainability.
