The Guiob Church Ruins left an indelible mark on me during my 2016 journey to Camiguin, Philippines. Standing amidst moss-covered walls and ancient trees, this site offers a poignant glimpse into the island's rich history and resilience.
Historical Background
Constructed in the early 16th century during the Spanish colonial period, the Guiob Church, also known as the Ruins of the Old Spanish Church of Bonbon, served as a central place of worship in Catarman.
However, in 1871, a catastrophic eruption of Mt. Vulcan devastated the town, burying it under volcanic debris. The church's sturdy stone walls withstood the calamity, and today, they stand as a testament to the island's enduring spirit.
