where to exit in slex going to tagaytay alternate route to tagaytay calax to tagaytay sta rosa exit to tagaytay calax to tagaytay toll fee slex exit to calax calax exit to tagaytay mamplasan exit to tagaytay

Last June, I went to Tagaytay for the second time this year with the same squad for an overnight stay.

This is our way to relax and escape from the hectic life in the city. It was also our celebration for our groom-to-be friend who will take vows with his long time girlfriend in July this year.

It was Saturday. As usual, we started our trip in the morning. We were driving two vehicles, the first one went ahead to Tagaytay City. Our car needed to fix one of the wheels so it took us hours before getting off the road. Luckily, we found a service along one of  the gasoline station (stopover) in SLEX.

To catch up with our friends, we decided to exit in Mamplasan where an entrance to CALAX is connected to. When we reached interchange to Sta. Rosa, we took off the road going to Silang. We turned right to South Blvd. in South Forbes, Sta. Rosa. We drove ahead to Cardiac Rd. where we notice a huge portion of a golf course in the area. Then in just a few minutes, we already reached Brgy. Tibig Rd. in Silang, Cavite.

Watch our trip here:

ALTERNATE WAY TO TAGAYTAY

When we reached the end of Brgy. Tibig Rd., we took off the road in Brgy. Munting Ilog until we reach Brgy. Ulat Rd. Then instead of finishing off the Ulat Rd., we turned right to Pulong Bunga Rd. This give us an access heading to Emilio Aguinaldo Hi-way. We exited from a place where we saw a signage of Camella Silang.

Somewhere along Brgy. Tibig Road

Though it took us more meters on the road, that way saved us so much time avoiding the heavy traffic along Sta. Rosa - Tagaytay Rd. Specially, a lot of people travel to Tagaytay this time on a Saturday.

Just a few meters away, we took off the access road to the newly opened Tagaytay Bypass Road which brought us straight to Kaybagal North. This saved  us time from time from the jampacked Tagaytay - Nasugbu Rd.

MELIA'S FAMILY HOUSE STAYCATION

In less than 2 hours coming from SLEX, we arrived to our destination. It was past noon when we came in to Melia's Family House. It was a great Airbnb find by my friend, Basti.

It is a 3-storey house with living area, dining area, kitchen (and dirty kitchen), a restroom and a guest room in the first floor, entertainment area and two bedrooms in the second, and a spacious rooftop with dining in the third floor. It also features high ceiling in the living area and a floor-to-ceiling glass walls.

Melia's Family House's facade

The property has covered parking space, a little garden in front of the house and veranda in the second level. We were also given slippers to use inside and another pair of it in the rooftop.

Although we were only seven, the whole house is open for up to 10 persons per stay.

The location of the property is not that far from the city proper. However, it is recommended to bring own vehicle since it is located in a secluded area where public utility vehicles are not available. Though, Savemore in Mendez Crossing is just a few minutes drive away from the house.

Cheapest Flights and Airline Tickets Online Booking

You can book a stay at Melia's Family House on Airbnb app. Rate starts at P8,000 per night. You can use Waze app for directions to this vacation house.

Hot tip! Buy your pasalubong in the morning (I suggest at around 8am) depending to the opening of stores or establishments in Tagaytay. In our case, we went to Mahogany Market for dried goods like Tawilis at 7:30am, then a quick visit at Balay Dako for their special Piaya and Kuuma Kakao for a pack of Cocoa.

Overall, I enjoyed our short trip to Tagaytay amidst of COVID-19 pandemic. Of course, we wore masks and face shields whenever we were out and about.

COMMUTING GUIDE: How to Get to Nuvali + Best Activities to Do in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna

CAFFE NATIVO: Your Artsy Local Coffee Shop in Tagaytay

This old yet still famous park sits atop of Tagaytay City's ridge.

The People's Park in the Sky, often simply called People's Park and originally named Palace in the Sky, is a historical urban park in Tagaytay, Cavite, Philippines. The park was converted from an incomplete mansion, known as the palace in the sky.

Although I have been to Tagaytay for many times, only once I have visited this place in 2013. Honestly, there's nothing to do much here aside from picture-taking of its old structures.

ABOUT PEOPLE'S PARK IN THE SKY

The park sits atop Mount Sungay, aka Mount Gonzales, which at the height of 709 meters (2,326 ft) above sea level and the highest point in Cavite, offers a breathtaking view of the surrounding areas as far as 50 kilometers in a clear day, including the view of Taal Lake and the famous Taal Volcano. It is also one of Tagaytay’s most visited landmark next to Picnic Grove.

While Tagaytay is often known as the “other Summer Capital” aside from Baguio due to its cooler climate compared to the lowlands, the summer weather is still warm at thirty degrees according to the thermometer of one of our flock. It’s still cooler in the shade, especially when there’s a cool breeze blowing.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Best time to visit peoples park is during the dry season around March to May so you can be able to see the view clearly.

WHAT TO WEAR IN TAGAYTAY

If you are going to Tagaytay during the rainy season, don’t forget to bring an extra jacket as the temperature would hit 18-20 degree Celcius. But if you’re going to Tagaytay during the dry season, casual shirts would be enough.

PALACE IN THE SKY

At the top is an unfinished and seemingly abandoned mansion commissioned by former First Lady Imelda Marcos in the 1980s. It is said that the construction was rushed to accommodate US President Ronald Reagan who announced his planned visit to the country, which was later, unfortunately, cancelled.

Mount Sungay was named because of its former distinctive peak which resembled horns (“sungay” means “horn” in Tagalog) and was used as a navigational aid by sailing ships. The peak was destroyed and flattened to accommodate the mansion.

The mansion was still unfinished when the Marcoses were ousted in 1986 revolution, and the park was given its current name. The mansion looks abandoned, with broken windows and molds sticking on its pillars and walls.

MARIAN CHAPEL

The Shrine of Our Lady, Mother of Fair Love is also one of the main features of the park. It was installed on December 15, 1974, by Hernan D. Reyes together with four high school students and two workers.

It is said that attempts to blast off the rock that contained the image of the Virgin Mary was made during the mansion’s construction in 1981 but were unable to, so it was left intact.

PAGASA DOPPLER RADAR STATION

Besides the mansion are the Doppler Radar station of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the state weather forecaster. Being a member of the Western Pacific weather group we were given a rare opportunity to go inside the weather radar station, our appointment being arranged by one of our meteorologist friends. Normally, access is restricted only to PAGASA personnel.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

Frankly, there's nothing here but old and abandoned establishments, maintained and managed by Tagaytay City as it was turned to be a park where people can enjoy the heights, the coldness and the view from Mt. Sungay. That's the reason why I never came back here.

But if you love historical sites (which I do), if you want to know something related to the past of a city, a province or a country, then I suggest you take a glance of this place.

By the way, we went here not knowing how to get here. Funny, but true. We asked some locals (those tricycle drivers) how to go here. Luckily, they suggested that we can take a jeepney ride or they can take us up here. Tricycles however, can't enter and drive up the hill atop of the park.

So once you reach entrance, your options are to walk or to get another jeepney ride that can bring you up to the top without sweating.

Of course, we chose to walk instead. Paid entrance fee. Bought some peeled green mangoes. It was really foggy when we went up. At times, the clouds are gone. But most of the time, it was dark.

We visited each places written above. Each establishment gives you different views of Taal Lake and the rest of Cavite, parts of Batangas and Laguna from other angles. It's indeed a 360 degree view of CALABARZON (minus Quezon, I guess).

Like what we did in Picnic Grove, we just roamed around the place, took selfies, ate snacks and I bought a souvenir for myself. A shirt that says, "I Love Tagaytay".

We probably spent more hours hear than in Picnic Grove. So that's our experience here at People's Park In The Sky.
