10 Most Dangerous Active Volcanoes on Earth


Taal Volcano continues to emit high levels of sulfur dioxide (SO2) for the past 24 hours, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported Thursday.

An average of 3,755 tonnes of SO2 was recorded on July 14. The figure, however, is lower compared to the average 4,184 tonnes and 6,134 tonnes recorded last July 13 and July 12, respectively.

Prolonged exposure to SO2 may cause sore throat and difficulty in breathing, according to the Department of Health.

The steam-rich plumes reached 1,800 meters in height on July 14.

At least 17 volcanic earthquakes caused by movements or eruptions of magma from the volcano were also recorded for the past 24 hours. These included 16 volcanic tremors lasting from 1 to 36 minutes, and one low frequency volcanic quake.

Although few, the volcanic earthquakes recorded are slightly higher than the six volcanic quakes the previous day.

Alert level 3 (magmatic unrest) is maintained over the Taal Volcano, as there is magmatic intrusion at its main crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions.

Phivolcs reiterated that entry into the Taal Volcano Island and the high-risk barangays in Agoncillo and Laurel towns must be prohibited due to the hazards of pyroclastic density currents and volcanic tsunami should strong eruptions occur.

Likewise, communities around the Taal Lake shores are advised to take precautionary measures against possible airborne ash and volcanic smog (vog) and calmly prepare for possible evacuation should unrest intensify.

Taal Volcano continues to emit high levels of SO2

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology on Thursday raised the status of Taal Volcano to Alert Level 3 due to signs of magmatic unrest.


In an advisory, Phivolcs said the volcano recorded a phreatomagmatic eruption at 3:16 p.m.

“Taal Volcano Main Crater generated a short-lived dark phreatomagmatic plume 1 kilometer-high with no accompanying volcanic earthquake,” the bureau said.

Alert Level 3 means there is magmatic intrusion at the main crater that may further drive succeeding eruptions, according to Phivolcs.

The agency also reminded the public that the Taal Volcano island is a Permanent Danger Zone, and that entry into the vicinity as well as the “high-risk” barangays of Agoncillo and Laurel in Batangas is prohibited.

The institute has a 5-step alert level for Taal, with Alert Level 5 being the highest and indicating that hazardous eruption is in progress.

Phivolcs reminded the public that Taal Volcano Island is a permanent danger zone and entry is prohibited.

It also advised communities around Taal Lake "to take precautionary measures and be vigilant of possible lakewater disturbances related to the ongoing unrest."

Phivolcs raises Alert Level 3 for Taal Volcano after phreatomagmatic eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) said it was monitoring four volcanoes considered to be at "abnormal level.”

PHIVOLCS Officer-in-Charge Renato Solidum said that these were the Taal Volcano in Batangas, the Mayon Volcano in Albay, the Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon, and the Kanlaon Volcano in Negros Island.

“At alert level 1, all the aforementioned volcanoes earlier can actually have a steam-driven explosion,” Solidum said.

“Meaning po, ‘yung mga maiinit na magma can actually boil up the water and cause the explosion. And then people then should not go inside their danger zones. Kasama po sa Taal Volcano Island ang bawal,” he added.

The Taal Volcano spewed ash in a phreatic eruption in early January due to hydro-thermal activities.


According to Solidum, PHIVOLCS observed a “slight change” in the Taal volcano after noting a decrease in its activity from January to March.

“But as of past several weeks, this decline has not continued. We began to see some slight change in its trend from pagbaba po, paghupa po nung pamamamaga because of pressure and nakita na namin na namamaga ulit. So we have to continuously monitor it,” Solidum said.

Meanwhile, the Mayon Volcano showed that it is “slighly again inflating from its base.”

In July, PHIVOLCS said that a slight inflammation at the summit of the Mayon Volcano was observed and that it continued to emit white steam, indicating magmatic activity underneath.

In late June, the agency also reported that hydrothermal or magmatic activity is occurring beneath the Kanlaon Volcano edifice.

Meanwhile, the 2021 budget of PHIVOLCS was slashed by P133 million earmarked for purchase of equipment and establishment of monitoring stations all over the country.

DOST-PHIVOLCS reminds the public that at Alert Level 1, sudden steam-driven or phreatic explosions, volcanic earthquakes, minor ashfall, and lethal accumulations or expulsions of volcanic gas can occur and threaten areas within the Taal Volcano Island (TVI).

DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly recommends that entry into TVI, Taal’s Permanent Danger Zone or PDZ, especially the vicinities of the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure, must remain strictly prohibited.

Local government units are advised to continuously assess previously evacuated barangays around Taal Lake for damages and road accessibilities and to strengthen preparedness, contingency, and communication measures in case of renewed unrest.

People are also advised to observe precautions due to ground displacement across fissures, possible ashfall, and minor earthquakes.

Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid flying close to the volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from sudden explosions and wind-remobilized ash may pose hazards to aircraft.
