The Department of Transportation (DOTr) officially launched the expansion of the Siargao Airport passenger terminal building with a ceremonial groundbreaking led by DOTr Secretary Vince B. Dizon on Friday in Sayak, Del Carmen.



The P95.2-million infrastructure project marks a major upgrade for Siargao’s main gateway, aiming to significantly boost capacity, improve traveler comfort, and support the island’s growing tourism industry.


Once completed, the expanded terminal will double in size—from 716 to 1,531 square meters—and increase the number of check-in counters from 3 to 9. Passenger capacity will also rise dramatically, from 200 to 750 people at a time, easing congestion and long wait times that have plagued the current facility.

“Our local and foreign tourists deserve better,” said Sec. Dizon during the ceremony. “That’s why President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. ordered us to improve the travel experience here in Siargao—because this island is one of our most important tourism destinations.”




Also present was Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, who hailed the expansion as a “gateway to greater prosperity.” She emphasized that the project is not just about upgrading an airport but about delivering on a national vision of tourism-led growth and development.

“As Siargao’s popularity rises, it’s crucial that we build the infrastructure to match demand,” Frasco said. “This expansion is a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to make travel more efficient and enjoyable, while also generating jobs and economic activity for the community.”



Siargao Airport, also known as Sayak Airport, currently handles 18 flights daily. However, increasing tourist arrivals have placed pressure on its facilities. The expansion project directly responds to this demand, aligning with broader goals to modernize the country’s air transport network.

The upgraded terminal is expected to provide not just more space, but a more seamless and comfortable travel experience—strengthening Siargao’s status as a world-class destination.




Officials from both the DOTr and DOT affirmed that the project would be completed efficiently, with construction beginning immediately following the groundbreaking ceremony.

Following Quezon City, Makati City maintained its rank as the second wealthiest city, with its assets growing to P243.44 billion in 2023 from P239.478 billion in the previous year. The capital, Manila (P85.92 billion), Pasig City (P53.72 billion), and Taguig City (P51.594 billion) also retained their third, fourth, and fifth spots, respectively, underscoring the sustained economic strength of Metro Manila's major hubs.

A notable surge was observed in Parañaque City, which impressively leapfrogged four ranks from 10th to 6th place. Parañaque's total assets reached P35.512 billion in 2023, an increase of over P8 billion from its 2022 figure of P27.376 billion.

Breaking into the top 10 from outside the National Capital Region was Mandaue City in Cebu, securing 7th place with P35.367 billion, and surpassing Mandaluyong City, which now ranks 8th with P33.92 billion. Davao City held steady at 9th place with P32.884 billion.

About Batangas International Port

The Batangas International Port or locally known as the Batangas Pier, is a seaport in Barangay Santa Clara, Batangas City primarily serving the Calabarzon region of the Philippines. The seaport covers an area of about 150 hectares.

Batangas International Port

It was declared as a national port in 1956. It serves as an alternate port to the Port of Manila. In the 90's it was the second biggest port in the Philippines in terms of revenue, just behind the Port of Manila.

The port is managed by the PPA and customs support is provided by the Bureau of Customs (BoC). In 2015, Batangas Pier received 32,777 ship calls, handled 2.3 million tons of cargo tonnage, and had a footfall of 6.3 million passengers.




Batangas Container Terminal

The Batangas Container Terminal is run by Asian Terminals and handles trade with Philippine industries in South Luzon. It has lower tariffs than the neighboring Port Manila, attracting foreign investment and encouraging shipping lines to shift their operations to Batangas. It primarily competes with Subic Port as the secondary facility to ease congestion at Port Manila.

Batangas Container Terminal

In 2016, Asian Terminals planned to revamp the port and improve its features. For this, an investment of 3.8 million pesos was announced and the plan focused on improving port connectivity, offering attractive rates and services to incoming ships, and creating a passenger-friendly environment.


Batangas Passenger Terminal

The Batangas Passenger Terminal handles tourist cruises, Ro-Ros, and ferries. It consists of 3 terminals which mainly service ships and ferries heading to the neighbouring islands for sightseeing. The main issue with the passenger terminals at Batangas is the irregular schedule, complex system of taxes and fees for tourists, and the constant threat of falling prey to scams that are commonplace within the port.

There were significant issues raised about the ease of doing business at Batangas, and this was also included in the project. Road congestion was a major issue that affected the port, and work began on connecting the port to the STAR Tollway and SLEX.

There were also plans to link Batangas Pier to Manila City to hasten development. As of 2020, the work on some projects is yet to start, while others are in the planning and deliberation phase. The linking of the STAR and SLEX systems to Batangas has been completed.

Batangas Pier has all the regular facilities of an average seaport. There are specific ticketing counters assigned per ferry operator. Ferry routes and corresponding information are usually visible on ticketing counters’ windows. Upon entering the seaport, bag inspections are conducted by security personnel. 

Batangas Port Boarding Area

Comfort rooms are available in the air-conditioned waiting areas. Seats may be limited due to Batangas Port’s large number of passengers. Arrive well before your departure time to secure seats. Snacks and refreshments are offered at small food stands.

You can do some last-minute shopping at the mini souvenir shops. Free public Wi-Fi is provided but only for a limited amount of time. If you’re ever low on power, charging stations for phones can be used for free.

Batangas Port’s location is conveniently near Batangas City’s Grand Terminal. They are 10 minutes away from each other. To get to Batangas Pier via public transport, take a bus from Manila.
