MANILA-BATAAN FERRY IS BACK: Here's the Trip Schedule and Promo Fare

With traffic congestion being a daily reality in Metro Manila, residents and commuters have long sought alternative ways to move around the city. From underground subway systems to the possibility of cable cars, many solutions have been explored. Now, attention is turning to a long-overlooked option: our rivers and lakes.

The government’s answer? The Manila Bay–Pasig River–Laguna Lake Ferry System, or MAPALLA—a proposed large-scale ferry network that could become a game-changer in urban mobility.

A Water-Based Transit Solution

According to the Department of Transportation (DOTr), MAPALLA is envisioned as a low-emission, high-volume, and frequent ferry service that will connect Laguna Lake to Manila Bay, passing through the Pasig and Marikina Rivers. With an estimated cost between ₱15 billion and ₱20 billion, the project includes not just the vessels, but also the construction of ferry stations, docks, and support infrastructure.

Loading...

DOTr Undersecretary for Planning and Project Development Timothy John Batan explained that the concept is about maximizing existing natural waterways to ease congestion on the roads. Despite Metro Manila being surrounded by rivers and coastal areas, water transport remains an underutilized option—currently limited to the small-scale Pasig River Ferry system.

Progress So Far

As of now, a feasibility study is nearing completion, and the DOTr hopes to secure full approval for the project by mid-2025. Discussions with potential private sector partners are already underway to help support the ferry system’s construction and operations.

“We expect the feasibility study to be finished by the first half of this year. By the middle of 2025, we aim to secure approval for the project,” Batan said during an interview on Radyo Pilipinas.

The ferry system’s first phase will stretch across a 30-kilometer route, featuring 32 stations along the Pasig and Marikina Rivers. To serve this route, the DOTr plans to deploy 40 electric ferries, each capable of carrying between 100 to 150 passengers per trip.

Integrated, Multimodal Transit

MAPALLA is more than just a ferry service—it’s envisioned as part of a fully integrated transport ecosystem. The plan includes seamless links with other public transport systems like trains and buses, as well as pedestrian and cycling infrastructure to promote sustainable mobility.

Inspired by successful water transit models such as the NYC Ferry in the United States and Thailand’s Chao Phraya River Ferry, MAPALLA aims to become a reliable and eco-friendly commuting option on a scale far beyond the current river ferry service operated by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

As Metro Manila’s roadways grow more congested each year, the MAPALLA Ferry System could finally unlock the potential of our waterways—offering a smarter, greener, and faster way to travel across the metro.

MAPALLA Ferry to Cater Passengers from Manila Bay and Laguna Lake Thru Pasig River

For millions of travelers heading to the world-renowned Boracay Island, the Caticlan Jetty Port serves as the primary and most vital sea gateway. Located just a stone's throw from the Caticlan Airport (Godofredo P. Ramos Airport, MPH), this bustling port is where your island paradise adventure truly begins. Understanding the process, fees, and what to expect here is crucial for a smooth and stress-free ferry boat ride to Boracay.

What is the Caticlan Jetty Port?

The Caticlan Jetty Port is the main departure point for all sea vessels transporting passengers to Boracay Island. It's a modern, organized terminal designed to handle the high volume of tourists flocking to the famous white sands.

It acts as the critical transfer point, connecting the land-based journey (from the airport or other parts of Panay) to the short sea voyage to Boracay.

Navigating the Caticlan Jetty Port: Your Step-by-Step Guide

The process at the Caticlan Jetty Port is well-structured, but it involves a few distinct steps. Having your documents and cash ready will make it seamless.

Arrival at the Port

Whether you arrive by tricycle, van, or walk from Caticlan Airport, you'll be dropped off right at the entrance of the port terminal building.

Entry and Initial Screening

Proceed into the terminal building. You might need to show your ID or pre-booked ferry tickets (if applicable) at the entrance.

Inquire at the information desk or look for signages pointing to the different payment windows.

Paying Essential Fees

This is the most crucial part. You'll need to pay three separate, mandatory fees at different windows. It's highly recommended to have cash in small denominations (₱50, ₱100, ₱200).

Terminal Fee: This fee covers the use of the port facilities. (Approx. ₱100-₱150 per person)

Environmental Fee: This mandatory fee contributes to Boracay's environmental protection and sustainability efforts. (Approx. ₱300 per person)

Boat Fare: This is the actual cost for the motorized banca (pump boat) ride to Boracay. (Approx. ₱50 per person)

Total Estimated Fees: Expect to pay around ₱450 - ₱500 per person for these combined fees.

Pro Tip: Keep all your receipts and tickets! They will be checked multiple times before you board the boat.

Security Check

After paying the fees, you'll proceed through a security check, similar to an airport, where your bags might be scanned.

Waiting Area

Once through security, you'll enter the pre-departure waiting area. There are often seats available, restrooms, and sometimes small stalls selling snacks and drinks.

Boarding Announcement

Listen for announcements for the next departing boat to Boracay. While there's a constant flow of boats, you'll be directed to the correct boarding lane.

Boat Boarding

Present your tickets/receipts to the personnel before boarding. You'll step onto a motorized banca, sometimes called a pump boat or simply "banca." Staff are usually on hand to assist with luggage.

The Boracay Ferry Boat Ride Experience

The actual ferry boat ride from Caticlan Jetty Port to Boracay Island is short, scenic, and generally very pleasant.

Vessel Type: You'll ride a motorized banca (also called a pump boat). These are traditional Filipino outrigger boats, adapted to safely transport passengers across the channel. They are equipped with life vests and operated by experienced boatmen.

Duration: The crossing to Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay Island typically takes only 10 to 15 minutes.

Destination: All public boats from Caticlan Jetty Port arrive at Cagban Jetty Port on Boracay Island. From Cagban, you'll take another land transfer (usually a tricycle) to your specific hotel or resort in Station 1, 2, or 3.

Boat Schedules (Caticlan ↔ Boracay)

First Trip: Around 4:30 AM – 5:00 AM (earliest from Boracay) or 6:00 AM (general public boat start).

Last Trip: Often 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM (standard operating hours), with night ferries available on demand for late departures.

Important: If arriving in Caticlan after 7-8 PM, pre-booking a night transfer is highly recommended, as public boat services become limited or cease operating.

Essential Tips for a Smooth Jetty Port Experience

Cash is King: While some larger port counters might accept card payments, cash, particularly in smaller denominations, is essential for fees and last-minute purchases.

Keep Documents Handy: Your IDs and payment receipts/tickets will be checked multiple times. Keep them accessible, not buried in your bag.

Arrive with Time to Spare: Especially during peak season (Holy Week, Christmas, long weekends), the port can get very busy. Arriving at least 30-45 minutes before your intended boat departure (if you have one) is advisable.

Pack Light (if possible): While porters are available, managing less luggage makes navigating the port and boarding the boat much easier.

Stay Hydrated: It can get warm in the waiting areas.

Beware of Unofficial Solicitations: Only deal with official payment counters and uniformed personnel. Avoid individuals offering "all-in" packages outside the terminal, as they may overcharge.

The Caticlan Jetty Port is more than just a transit point; it's the official gateway that connects travelers from all corners of the world to the pristine beauty of Boracay. A little preparation ensures your short ferry ride is as enjoyable as the island itself.

PUP Ferry Station Resumes Operations After Pontoon Repairs

The best alternate way going around Metro Manila!

The Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has brought the Pasig River Ferry Service back in operation, serving an alternative way to those traveling in Manila, Mandaluyong, Makati, and Pasig City.

Free Ferry Ride

Addressing the persistent issue of traffic congestion in the country, the national government is actively fulfilling its responsibilities by introducing traffic-alleviating measures, including the provision of free rides on the Pasig River Ferry.

Originally introduced in the 1990s, the Pasig River Ferry service aimed to present a viable alternative mode of transportation for commuters in Metro Manila.

However, financial constraints and operational challenges led to the suspension of the Pasig River Ferry system in 2011.

Inside Pasig River Ferry Passenger Seat

In a renewed effort to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital region, the Pasig River Ferry stations resumed operations in 2019. The ferry boats are now operated and managed by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), marking a significant step in providing commuters with a convenient and efficient mode of transportation.

The service spans a distance of over 26 kilometers and uses seven ferry boats, two of which can carry up to 57 passengers while others are much smaller.

About Batangas International Port

The Batangas International Port or locally known as the Batangas Pier, is a seaport in Barangay Santa Clara, Batangas City primarily serving the Calabarzon region of the Philippines. The seaport covers an area of about 150 hectares.

Batangas International Port

It was declared as a national port in 1956. It serves as an alternate port to the Port of Manila. In the 90's it was the second biggest port in the Philippines in terms of revenue, just behind the Port of Manila.

The port is managed by the PPA and customs support is provided by the Bureau of Customs (BoC). In 2015, Batangas Pier received 32,777 ship calls, handled 2.3 million tons of cargo tonnage, and had a footfall of 6.3 million passengers.

Batangas Container Terminal

The Batangas Container Terminal is run by Asian Terminals and handles trade with Philippine industries in South Luzon. It has lower tariffs than the neighboring Port Manila, attracting foreign investment and encouraging shipping lines to shift their operations to Batangas. It primarily competes with Subic Port as the secondary facility to ease congestion at Port Manila.

Batangas Container Terminal

In 2016, Asian Terminals planned to revamp the port and improve its features. For this, an investment of 3.8 million pesos was announced and the plan focused on improving port connectivity, offering attractive rates and services to incoming ships, and creating a passenger-friendly environment.

Batangas Passenger Terminal

The Batangas Passenger Terminal handles tourist cruises, Ro-Ros, and ferries. It consists of 3 terminals which mainly service ships and ferries heading to the neighbouring islands for sightseeing. The main issue with the passenger terminals at Batangas is the irregular schedule, complex system of taxes and fees for tourists, and the constant threat of falling prey to scams that are commonplace within the port.

Batangas Passenger Terminal

There were significant issues raised about the ease of doing business at Batangas, and this was also included in the project. Road congestion was a major issue that affected the port, and work began on connecting the port to the STAR Tollway and SLEX.

There were also plans to link Batangas Pier to Manila City to hasten development. As of 2020, the work on some projects is yet to start, while others are in the planning and deliberation phase. The linking of the STAR and SLEX systems to Batangas has been completed.
