basilica vs cathedral major basilica basilica near me 17 minor basilica in the philippines oldest basilica in the philippines first minor basilica in the philippines national shrines in the philippines

In the Catholic Church, a basilica is a designation given by the Pope to a church building. Basilicas are distinguished for ceremonial purposes from other churches.

The building need not be a basilica in the architectural sense (a rectangular building with a central nave flanked by two or more longitudinal aisles).

Basilicas are either major basilicas – of which there are four, all in the Diocese of Rome – or minor basilicas, of which there were 1,810 worldwide as of 2019.

Numerous basilicas are notable shrines, often even receiving significant pilgrimages, especially among the many that were built above a confessio or the burial place of a martyr – although this term now usually designates a space before the high altar that is sunk lower than the main floor level (as in the case in St Peter's and St John Lateran in Rome) and that offer more immediate access to the burial places below.

Some Catholic basilicas are Catholic pilgrimage sites, receiving tens of millions of visitors per year.

Churches designated as papal basilicas, in particular, possess a papal throne and a papal high altar, at which no one may celebrate Mass without the pope's permission.

Here are the 19 basilica churches designated in the Philippines:

SLEX Toll Road 4 (TR4) is a large-scale infrastructure project extending the South Luzon Expressway by 66.74 km from Santo Tomas, Batangas to Lucena City, Quezon

Designed as a four-lane toll road, it’s meant to ease congestion along the old Daang Maharlika (AH26) and cut travel time significantly—from 3–4 hours to approximately 45 minutes—1 hour.

Loading...

Route & Segmentation

The main alignment is divided into six construction packages:

  • TR4A: Santo Tomas → Makban (11.32 km)

  • TR4B: Makban → San Pablo (12.75 km)

  • TR4C: San Pablo → Tiaong (7.50 km)

  • TR4D: Tiaong → Candelaria (15 km)

  • TR4E: Candelaria → Tayabas (10.21 km)

  • TR4F: Tayabas → Lucena/Mayao (9.96 km)

It includes seven interchanges at Santo Tomas, Makban, San Pablo, Tiaong, Candelaria, Tayabas, and Lucena.

Project History & Timeline

Early planning dates back to early 2010s; construction officially began with a groundbreaking ceremony on March 26, 2019, by DPWH and SMC.

The project was initially set for completion in 2022 but faced delays due to right‑of‑way issues and pandemic disruptions.

As of January 2024, as-built progress varied per package: TR4A (~19%), TR4C (~62%), TR4D not yet started; overall right‑of‑way acquisition was ~93% complete.

Budget & Financing

Initial project estimates ranged from ₱13.1 billion to ₱26.1 billion, depending on the package.

SMC SLEX Inc. allocated:

  • ₱7.4 billion (2023) and ₱6.77 billion towards TR4 and SLEX widening.

  • Additional supplemental capex of ₱3.27 billion in 2024 — bringing total capex to ₱11.33 billion.

  • Plans to fully fund the ₱26.1 billion project by completion in 2026.

Construction & Current Status

Construction remains ongoing, with partial partial opening possible in 2025, while full operation is targeted for 2026—or possibly early 2027.

As of late 2024, some connected lanes along the existing SLEX are being widened to 6 lanes per direction, expected to complete by mid‑2025.

Supporting infrastructure, such as the Ayala Greenfield Interchange, began construction in October 2024, enhancing connectivity.

Strategic Importance

TR4 is a cornerstone of the national "Build, Build, Build" infrastructure initiative aimed at decongesting provincial roads and boosting regional mobility .

It's expected to reduce travel time from Sto. Tomas to Lucena from ~3 hours to ~45 minutes, transforming transportation for communities, tourism, and logistics.

It connects to upcoming SLEX TR5, which will extend further into the Bicol region, enhancing economic integration and trade routes.

Challenges & Concerns

Land acquisition hurdles delayed initial timelines—most right‑of‑way issues resolved by early 2024 .

Critics argue SLEX expansions—including TR4—are reactive, addressing traffic symptoms without fixing design flaws or flood resilience.

Drivers report pavement issues, poor signage, and RFID glitches on parts of the existing SLEX—a reminder of the need for quality controls as new sections come online.

Summary

SLEX TR4 represents one of the Philippines' most significant regional projects to date—promising transformative reductions in travel time, decongestion, and economic uplift for CALABARZON and beyond. Its success rests on timely completion, high-quality construction, and seamless integration with existing corridors. While minor challenges remain, the vision of a high-speed, efficient southern expressway is rapidly taking shape.

All You Need to Know About SLEX Toll Road 4 (TR4)

In just 3 to 4 hours, the beach is yours. Laiya is San Juan's gem. It is one of the closest beach from Manila where you, your friends and family can enjoy from.

If you are into white beaches like me, this place in Batangas could be your top list. Laiya Beach also boast its shallow waters and long beaches which are perfect for kids and family outing.

I've been to Laiya for 3 times. The first time was in summer of 2012 when I brought my family and relatives to one budget resorts (forgot the name) along Laiya beach. There, we rented a cottage and spend a day tour.

The second time was a company-sponsored outing/team building at Laiya Coco Grove Resort in 2014. It was also summer time and the weather was great. Instead of day tour, our company let us stayed overnight so that we can enjoy beach activities during day time then chill at the pool at night.

The third time I traveled to Laiya was a day tour with my girlfriend's family at Kabayan Beach Resort.

Also in San Juan (not in Laiya) is the rocky side of Imelda. There I got to experience to stay at a Santorini-inspired beach house, Casa Amara. The resort is known for having an infinity pool overlooking Tayabas Bay.

Just passed the zigzag road to the west, you can also reach Lobo, Batangas from San Juan. There, you might want to experience the pebble beach of Lobo and the infinity pool from Punta Verde Resort.

Laiya has white sand beaches and clear waters, and as such is frequently compared to Boracay, which is the country's top beach choice for local tourists, celebrities, and foreign tourists alike.

Weathering-formed crushed shells and corals make up both beaches' white sands, with Boracay's being noticeably finer and whiter. Laiya is one of the beaches that have gained popularity recently; thus, there are not as many luxury resorts and activities in the area as compared to other beaches in the country.

It is within driving distance (from two to six hours depending on traffic) from the city of Manila.

HOW TO GET TO LAIYA, SAN JUAN, BATANGAS

All of my four-time visit to Laiya we brought our own vehicle for transport. But here's a commuting guide if you plan to hop on-and-off PUVs:

Via San Juan

The fastest way to Laiya is via San Juan. Take ALPS Bus from either EDSA Nepa Q-Mart, Araneta Center Cubao, or Alabang Grand Terminal to San Juan, Batangas. The earliest trip leaves at 3:00AM and the last trip departs at 5:00PM. ALPS Bus has 12 total departures per day. The fare is ₱190.

In San Juan, right in front of the Municipal Hall, board a Laiya- or Hugom-bound jeepney. Take note that the last departing jeepney to Laiya leaves at 5:00PM. There are also tricycles that are willing to take you to Laiya but you just need to shell out more.

Via Lipa

From Pasay Buendia, EDSA Kamuning, or Araneta Center Cubao, take Ceres Tours, DLTB, JAM, Batangas Star Express, RRCG, etc to Lipa City, Batangas. Travel Time is about two hours and the fare ranges from ₱135 to ₱150.

From Lipa bus terminal, take a jeepney or van to San Juan, Batangas. The van is faster but will cost you much higher.

And then from San Juan, take a jeepney or tricycle to Laiya.

For those who are bringing own vehicle, you may use Waze or Google Maps for directions. If you don’t have a private vehicle, you can rent a car or van here.
