Appreciate serenity and beauty of nature in this Aurora waterfall.


Aurora is known for its beaches and surfing destinations but this province has also other great tourist attractions. This includes some magnificent waterfalls that can be seen in the municipalities of the province and one of them is the majestic Caunayan Falls.


In 2017, my gang (Team Basti), went for a 3-day trip to Aurora including an overnight stay at Dinadiawan Beach in Dipaculao. On our last day, we did not miss to visit to experience Caunayan Falls.

SAN LUIS AND ITS NATURAL BEAUTY

Not known to many, the municipality of San Luis, like Baler, is rich in natural resources and scenic tourist destinations. It boasts crystal clear river system, abundant flora and fauna, charming waterfalls, spring water and the heavily forested terrain.

San Luis is actually the home of the two popular falls in Aurora. The first one is the Ditumabo and the other one is the serene Caunayan Falls which is more accessible. But what really makes Caunayan so special is the serenity of the entire place.

San Luis has five popular tourist destinations. These include the two major waterfalls – the Caunayan falls (also known as L. Pimentel Falls) and the Ditumabo Falls. Ditumabo falls are reachable by crossing rivers, fallen lodges and wooden bridges. It will take you about forty-five minutes to reach the fascinating waterfall.

Meanwhile Caunayan is much easier to hike and it is a pleasant environment to have your picnic and outing. The mild temperature of Caunayan falls makes it perfect for cleansing the body.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT CAUNAYAN FALLS

The Caunayan Falls is a seven-tier falls but the water coming down is not as wide and appealing as the Ditumabo which I have already visited during my first travel to Baler. Plus the fact that it is more accessible than Ditumabo, it will give you more reason to choose to visit it.

The entrance via Amatorio Resort where you have to pay Php20.00 per head and Php100.00 per cottage. The cottages are located along the stream passing to the basin of the falls.

Downstairs to Caunayan Falls

From the entrance, you will just have to walk a few steps to reach the stairs heading to the falls.

One thing you will notice upon arrival to the falls, the catch basin is below-the-waist deep you appreciate its crystal clear water and soft sand bottom.

There are just parts of the streams which a bit strong but bearable. Another notable feature of Caunayan Falls are the boulders of huge rocks with varying sizes.

Knowing that Baler is one of the top tourist destinations in the country, finding a place to stay here is not really a big challenge but of course, it would be ideal and less hassle to book your reservations as early as possible.

HOW TO GET TO CAUNAYAN FALLS

From Baler town proper, you can hire a jeep or a private vehicle that will take you to Barangay Real in San Luis. From there, you can just walk from the end of the road near the river and you will see the Caunayan Falls.


FROM MANILA TO BALER

Take a transit bus from Cubao via Genesis Bus which will take you directly to Baler. These airconditioned buses has daily trips from 3Am to 7:30 Am with 6-7 hours travel time. The fare would cost you around Php550-600 per head.

For those who are bringing own vehicle, you may use Waze or Google Maps for directions. If you don’t have a private vehicle, you can rent a car or van here.


BEFORE GOING TO CAUNAYAN FALLS

You might be thinking of including Caunayan Falls to your Baler itinerary?


Here are some of the things to consider before going to Caunayan Falls:

  • Caunayan Falls is easier to access than Ditumabo Falls
  • The entrance fee to Caunayan Falls is cheaper. (Php 10 for kids / Php 20 for adults)
  • Cottage can be rented for Php100 and is good for 5-6 pax.
  • The water is only waist-high deep.
  • There are publicly accessible comfort rooms nearby.
  • No overnight stays.
  • Water current is very strong so be cautious especially if you are with kids.

Learn a bit of history at this tourist spot in Baler.


We started our tour in Baler by visiting Ermita Hill in the morning. Our guide brought us here first since we can reach other tourist spots along the way such as Diguisit Beach, Diguisit Falls, Aniao and Lukso-Lukso Islets and Casiguran from Zabali Road.

ABOUT ERMITA HILL

Ermita Hill is one of the highest places in Baler. There, you will be treated to a fabulous panoramic view of Baler's lengthy and pristine coastline and the bay area.

There you may learn about Tromba Marina, the destructive tidal wave that wiped out a huge part of Baler, the uphill view deck, the abandoned/closed tunnel and the tall white cross upstairs.


THE DESTRUCTION BROUGHT BY TROMBA MARINA

Tromba Marina was the name given to the destructive tidal wave that struck Baler, Aurora on December 27, 1735. This monstrous wave caught everyone off-guard when it arrived around 2:00 AM. The town was devastated in seconds and many lives were immediately lost.

The tidal wave tremendous proportion engulfed the town without a warning that within an hour it was gone, Fray Jose de San Rafael, OFM, the parish priest of Casiguran, who was on vacation in Baler survived the deluge by swimming to the hill of point Baja (Ermita). Others who survived the catastrophe included members of the Angara, Bihasa, Bitong, Carrasco, Ferreras, Lumasac and Poblete clans.


The phenomenon was weird, because it happened so suddenly. There was no sign or manifestation of bad weather and no predicted typhoon; besides, the night was clear and bright. The nearby town of Casiguran, mission of Dipaculao, and the hamlets of Dingalan were not affected despite the fact that they were located on the same shoreline.

After the devastation, a new town was resurrected on a land belonging to Sitio Zabali located 15045’ latitude on a hilly terrain about 8 kms, west of Baler Bay. It borders 15 km. northwest, with the mission of San Jose de Casecnan (Maria Aurora); 62 km. southwest, the district Pantabangan; 52 km. to the north, the town of Casiguran; 97 km. south, the district of Infanta; and, 99 km west, the town of Bongabon. The previous site of the town that was wiped out by the devastating tidal wave was renamed Kinagunasan (washed out).

Except for the memories and legend that has behind, the destruction of the old town still remains a mystery to this day.

THINGS TO DO AT ERMITA HILL 

Here are some activities you can do during your visit to Ermita Hill:


Check Out Tombra Marina Installation

At the base of the hill, just along the highway, you’ll find this sculpture called Tromba Marina. The sculpture serves as a reminder of that incident. It depicts several residents climbing the hill and behind them is a giant wave.

From the Tromba Marina sculpture, you can choose to use the stairs of drive to the viewing deck area where the chapel and the tunnel are also located. Or you can opt to drive and bring your vehicle since there's parking space uphill.


Enjoy The Panoramic Overlooking View

Once you reach the uphill part of this place, there's a view deck for those who wanted to see the bay of Baler and the Sabang Beach from afar.


From here, there's also a vantage point where you can see a part of the river of Baler and the hanging bridge of Sabang.


Stop At The Chapel

There’s a chapel at the viewing deck with a very interesting marker that spoke of a tunnel here leading to Santa Elena. The marker describes the Ermita Hill Chapel, the ancient viewing point and tunnel.

Hike Up To The White Cross

If you have enough energy, go take the stairs to the cross located at the uppermost part of Ermita Hill. The stairs are different from the ones connecting the monument of Tromba Marina to the view deck area.

From here, it will give you lush green ambiance and it doesn't have good overlooking view compared to the decks downstairs. You may appreciate the place and say a prayer while you are there.

From Ermita Hill, you may go to Diguisit Beach next since it is located along the same road in Zabali.

Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon House in Baler wonderfully represents the culture of Filipino homes with its simple and modest architecture. Nipa huts like this have been sheltering Filipinos long before the Spaniards came.

This traditional house is locally known as “Bahay Kubo” and is still common in many provinces and rural areas here in the Philippines. The house is still standing on an average sized corner lot. A noticeable wooden house wrapped with nipa roofs.

ABOUT AURORA ARAGON QUEZON

Aurora Aragon-Quezon was born to Pedro Aragon and Zeneida Molina on February 19, 1888 in Baler, a remote coastal town in Tayabas which is now Aurora Province.

Aurora was technically the second First Lady of the Philippines (next to Hilaria Aguinaldo, wife of the first Philippine President Emilio Aguinaldo) but was not considered until Victoria Quirino who was officially regarded as the first to be named with the role "First Lady".

The former first lady Aurora Quezon was involved in the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and an orphanage called Associación de Damas Filipinas. Aurora was notably the first chairman of Philippine Red Cross where she and her daughters volunteered as nurses. Due to the legacy that she left, a former sub-province and now a separate one was named after her. The Aurora Boulevard is also named after her.

Here are some things you may consider before visiting Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon House:
  • The Doña Aurora House Entrance Fee is Php15 and you can avail the Php30 Package from Museo De Baler which gives you access on both facilities.
  • It is a two story wooden house with concrete basement.
  • There is really nothing much to see and a 10-15 minutes tour is enough to explore the place.
  • There are comfort rooms available.


WHAT TO SEE INSIDE AURORA ARAGON QUEZON HOUSE

If you are into ancestral houses, Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar must be your top destination in the Philippines. But here in Baler, they have Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon House at least.

Doña Aurora Aragon-Quezon House can be already seen from Baler town proper or the Baler Plaza. This is located at the corner of San Luis & Rizal St., Poblacion, Baler, Aurora.

From here, you can also explore all the nearby tourist spots in Baler such as Museo De Baler, Baler Church and the public market as well.

The best place to see rock formations in Baler!


Situated on Baler Bay along the Cemento Beach, Diguisit Beach features beautiful rock formations with perfect scenery of the clear blue sky and the vast wide ocean.

The rock formations and islets, known as Aniao (also Anyao) Rock Formations and Lukso-Lukso Islets or simply Diguisit Islets, nestled along the shore of Diguisit Beach. 


The main attraction of the Diguisit Beach is the rock formation. It is the evidence of the millions of years of wave pounding that mold its form. The Diguisit rock formations just lie beside the famous Cobra Reef- it is the ultimate surfing paradise for surfers in Baler who want to take a pounding.

The three special things that you would get from this destination are the rock formation which is thirty meters high and perfect for rock climbing, beyond it are a surfing paradise that surfers will certainly enjoy and lastly, the white sand beach which is a delicate location for beach-goers.

ABOUT DIGUISIT BEACH

Diguisit Beach is one of the famous surf spots in Baler; it is situated on Baler Bay along the Cemento Beach. The place features beautiful rock formations with perfect scenery of the clear blue sky and the vast wide ocean. It is a must-see place where tourist can relax and enjoy their vacation.


Located a few kilometers outside Baler town proper and on the coastal road that runs all the way to Dicasalarin Cove, Diguisit Beach is a favorite location for photography enthusiasts.

ENTRANCE

Diguisit beach is privately owned by the Dela Torre Beach Resort, visitors can access the beach after paying an entrance fee of Php20.


It is smaller compared to the famous surfing beach of Sabang and in contrast of Sabang beach; it faces northwest which is perfect to watch the setting sun.

WHAT TO SEE AT DIGUISIT BEACH

Off the coast of Barangay Zabali, Baler, Diguisit Beach is a perfect destination after visiting Ermita Hill. Unlike Sabang Beach, Diguisit has creamy white sand although much coarser than the former. The real attraction at this beach however is its stunning rock formations, making for magnificent landscape shots.


Aniao Islets

Two small but imposing islands lie south of the islet of Dimadimalangat. These islets jut straight from the sea like bullets, with shrubs, small trees and other greenery growing on top surfaces. 

Kingfishers, gulls and hawks use these islets as lookout points for fish. Towering waves relentlessly pound the base of the formations, challenging even the most intrepid of rock climbers.

Lukso-Lukso Islets

At least three islets comprise the rock formations known to the locals as "Lukso-Lukso." One of these small islands is connected to the mainland and at low tide you can see white grainy sands, crushed corals and numerous seashells, some inhabited by hermit crabs.


This island formation is the southernmost point and is accessible to vehicles coming from Baler. The sea bottom and undersea reefs around these islets are reportedly good areas for diving, and during calm months, snorkeling. 

Diguisit Falls

Another interesting sight to behold is the flowing waters of Digisit Waterfalls which is sitting near the main road.


This attraction in Baler might be often missed because it was just a smaller version of Ditumabo falls in San Luis, Aurora. Though it looks steep and has huge rocks to climb up and see the main cascade, it's still easy to hike up.

HOW TO GET TO DIGUISIT BEACH

Tourists who want to visit Diguisit Beach and its extravagant rock formation, can take a bus in Cubao. You can take a ride on Genesis Bus Station near Baliwag Station. Travel from Cubao to Baler is six hours. Upon reaching Baler, you can ask a tricycle driver to tour you around Baler for half day or whole day ranging from Php 500 to Php 800.


For those who are bringing own vehicle, you may use Waze or Google Maps for directions. If you don’t have a private vehicle, you can rent a car or van here.

Situated on the same road to Cemento Beach, Ermita Hill and Dicasalarin Cove, it was a natural stopover for our half-day tour.
