Architectural FeatureS

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church showcases a blend of modern architectural elements. The facade features an interplay of lines, gradation, and texture, with Doric columns supporting a portico topped by a red-tiled roof. Stone brick decorations flank the entrance, while the recessed pediment is adorned with wooden slats and rhomboid windows.


Inside, the nave walls are punctuated by arched doors and stained glass windows, leading to an altar set against a marble apse wall. A distinctive bell tower, composed of three pillars connected by staircases, stands on the epistle side of the church.

Ermita Church History

The church began as a rustic shrine made of bamboo, nipa, and molave wood that was built to house the image of Our Lady of Guidance in the area where it was found in 1571 by Spanish soldiers under Miguel López de Legazpi.

The shrine eventually became a chapel built in 1606 as house for the image and was called La Hermita ("The Chapel" or "Hermitage" in English). The word also gave the name to the present district in Manila where the chapel is located.

The church was damaged many times due to earthquakes. In addition, the image had to be transferred to the Manila Cathedral for safekeeping during the British occupation of Manila in 1762–1764. A more permanent stone church was built in 1810; the image was returned to the church in 1918.

In 1945 near the end of World War II, the church was reduced to rubble during the Battle of Manila. However, the image was saved from destruction and was temporarily kept in a private residence. Work began for the reconstruction of the church in 1947 with a new design by architect Carlos A. Santos-Viola.

On March 28, 1949, attorney and future senator Jose W. Diokno married Carmen Icasiano at Ermita Church. Diokno was also baptized here on September 3, 1922, his godmother and second mother was Paz Wilson. By 1953, the reconstruction was completed and the image was returned to the new church.

On December 3, 2005, Manila Archbishop Most Rev. Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales, DD elevated the status of this church to an archdiocesan shrine.

If you are coming from Monumento Area:

Option 1: Ride a Jeepney bound to Baclaran (via Mabini). Ask the Driver to alight you off at U.N. Avenue corner Antonio Flores Street. From there, you can just walk going to Ermita Church.

Option 2: Ride the LRT-1. Alight off at U.N. Avenue Station. From there, you can just walk or ride a Pedicab going to Ermita Church.

If you are coming from Baclaran Area:

Option 1: Ride a Jeepney bound to Divisoria or Monumento (via Mabini). Ask the Driver to alight you off at U.N. Avenue corner Antonio Flores Street. From there, you can just walk going to Ermita Church.

Option 2: Ride the LRT-1. Alight off at U.N. Avenue Station. From there, you can just walk or ride a Pedicab going to Ermita Church.

Via Private Car

But if you are bringing your own vehicle, you may follow driving directions from Waze or Google Maps. However, parking is limited and on first-come-first-serve basis.

The Our Lady of the Pillar Parish Church, commonly known as the Santa Cruz Church and also designated as the Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament, is a baroque Roman Catholic parish church in the district of Santa Cruz, Manila, Philippines. It was built when the arrabal (suburb) of Santa Cruz was established by the Jesuits in the early 17th century.

The church had undergone many repairs and reconstruction, with the last reconstruction done in the 1950s. It is the first Mission and Mother house of Filipino Sacramentinos, making it as the center of Congregation Activities and events.

The church façade is topped with a statue of Our Lady of the Pillar, the patroness of the church, whose feast is held every 3rd Sunday of October. On December 7, 2017, Pope Francis granted the Canonical coronation of the venerated image. The current parish priest is Fr. Rudsend P. Paragas, SSS.

On June 3, 2018, as part of the Church-wide celebrations of Corpus Christi, it was officially raised to an Archdiocesan Shrine by the decree of the then-Archbishop of Manila, Luis Antonio Cardinal Tagle, in the Archdiocese-wide holiday mass held in the church.

Santa Cruz Church Architecture

The Jesuits built the first Catholic church in the area where the present Santa Cruz Parish stands on June 20, 1619. The original church design was made of stone and wood. The Jesuits enshrined the image of Our Lady of Pilar in 1643 to serve the predominantly Chinese residents in the area.

The first church was made of stone and wood was built in the 17th century. On June 3, 1863, an earthquake destroyed the church. Fr. Agustin de Mendoza began reconstruction work on the church in 1868.

The church facade is characteristically Baroque with Ionic piers vertically dividing the first two levels in three parts. Three semicircular arch doorways form as main entrance to the church. A Celtic-like window flanked by small semicircular windows is found at the center of the second level.

Forming as the pediment, the topmost level has its raking cornice in undulating liens emanating from the broken pediment found above the statued niche. The domed belfry rises on the right in six levels.

The original structure of the church was twice damaged by earthquakes and then completely destroyed during the Battle of Manila.

The present building of the church, reconstructed in 1957, was designed to reflect the Spanish baroque style that Resembles, Architectural style of Spanish missions in California. Art Deco and Romanesque influences the Interior of the Church.

How to Get to Santa Cruz Church

If you're coming from the Monumento or Baclaran areas, take the LRT-1 to Carriedo Station. You will simply walk to the Santa Cruz Parish Church from there. If the LRT-1 is not accessible, you can take a Jeepney to Carriedo.

If you're coming from Antipolo or Rizal, you can take the LRT-2 to Recto Station. You should walk from Recto to AVENIDA and then search for Jeepneys bound for Baclaran, Pier, Mabini, or SM Manila. Request that the driver drop you off at Santa Cruz Parish Church.

For those who are bringing own vehicle, you may follow Waze or Google Maps for directions. There's only a limited parking space.

1. Our Lady of Remedies Parish (Malate Church)

First on the list, we start by visiting this church in Malate. Built by the Augustinian friars in 1588, the Malate Church is one of the oldest Churches in the Philippines. The church features a “good blending of Muslim and baroque architecture”.

Malate Church is the first parish where the Columbans settled in their assignment in the country in 1929. Since then, the receives numerous pilgrims yearly during Holy Week, designating its church patio for those who come to pray the Stations of the Cross.

Heading northwest on M.H. del Pilar, pilgrims can dedicate 15 minutes of walk to Ermita Church.

3. Archdiocesan Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Consolacio y Correa (San Agustin Church)

A 25-minute walk from Ermita Church, San Agustin Church in Intramuros, Manila stands as the oldest stone church in the Philippines.


With its Baroque architecture, this historic church was declared a National Cultural Treasure by then-President Marcos, Sr. in 1973 and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993.

The Manila Cathedral, being the Premier Church, Cathedral, and Basilica, serves as the Episcopal Seat of the Archbishop of Manila. It is the first Cathedral in the Philippines and also the only church in the country “elevated to the rank of a Basilica by the Pope’s own initiative (motu proprio)”.

5. Minor Basilica and National Shrine of San Lorenzo Ruiz (Binondo Church)

20 minutes from Manila Cathedral, pilgrims can proceed to the Binondo Church in their Visita Iglesia. The Church was dedicated to the first Filipino saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz. The saint once considered the church as his spiritual home.

In 1992, His Holiness, Pope John Paul II granted the Binondo Church the “minor basilica” title “in honor of the first Filipino saint.”

6. Archdiocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament (Santa Cruz Church)

In just 10 minutes of walk from Binondo Church, pilgrims can reach their sixth church – the Santa Cruz Church. The church enshrines a replica of the statue of Our Lady of the Pillar venerated in the city of Zaragoza, Spain.

The Church was once headed by Spanish Augustinian Recollect, Fr. Exequiel Moreno who was beatified by His Holiness, Pope Paul VI in 1975 and was eventually canonized Saint by His Holiness, Pope John Paul II in 1992.

7. Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church)

Five minutes from Santa Cruz Church, pilgrims can pray their last two stations of the Cross in Quiapo Church. Who wouldn’t recognize this church flocked by multitude of devotees annually to honor the Black Nazarene?
