Never miss a visit to this park to complete your Baguio trip!

We all know that Baguio City served as a retreat place during the American occupation because of its cold climate and natural sceneries.

Wright Park is one of the many recreational facilities created during that time, named after Governor Luke Edward Wright, a former Governor-General of the Philippines

WRIGHT PARK

The whole park itself is very picturesque and Instagram-worthy. Take a picture by the Pool of Pines, a rectangular body of water in the middle of the park. Trees are very abundant here, a contrast from the busy Session Road.

WRIGHT PARK ENTRANCE

Wright Park is free for all visitors, and fees apply only to some activities inside.

ACTIVITIES AT WRIGHT PARK

There are a few activities you can do here aside from sightseeing. Horseback riding rentals are available if you don’t want to stroll the park by foot.

Horseback-riding at the Wright Park

You can rent a horse for P300/hour and P200/30 minutes, or depending on your negotiation. There’s a viewing deck if you just want to watch the horses.

I have visited this place couple of times (2011 and 2012) because I love the ambiance here. Wright Park covers a chunk of space surrounded by pine trees and flowers.

From the entry you will need to take a high stairs to get to the upper level where you can see the long lagoon (or pool) and flowers towards to The Mansion.

There are many selfie spots here and you will just love the atmosphere.

THE MANSION

Just a few steps away from Wright Park is The Mansion. It is exactly located just in front of the park (where the lagoon or pool is located at).

The famous Mansion, the official summer palace of the Philippine president, is located just across the Wright Park. Entrance is also free, and you can take photos in front of the mansion.

THE MAKING OF THE MANSION

The Mansion House was built in 1908 to serve as the official summer residence of American Governors-General at the insistence of Governor-General William Cameron Forbes. The name is derived from the summer cottage in New England of Governor Forbes whose administration the original Mansion House was built under.

Architect William E. Parsons, based on preliminary plans by architect Daniel H. Burnham, the planner of the city of Baguio, designed the mountain retreat following the tenets of the City Beautiful Movement.

The Mansion consists of an elegantly designed Spanish Colonial Revival main building and a guesthouse. The elaborate main gate, made of ornate ironwork, was once thought to be a replica of a main gate of Buckingham Palace in London, but this is false.

The front gate is still one of the most photographed sections of the complex. The public may visit the inside of the Mansion House, which contains a museum featuring presidential memorabilia.

My Personal Experience

I've been to Tagaytay twice in 2013, twice again in 2018. But non of those visits I got to personally experience Sky Ranch Tagaytay. Except in 2014 when my girlfriends barkada went on an overnight tour at Casa Astillero in Calatagan, Batangas and in 2017 when I was invited by Sky Ranch management to feature some of their restaurants inside.

Back in 2014, me and my girlfriend did a side trip here after our stay in Calatagan. We just wanted to experience riding inside their famous Sky Eye. Then, went to Laguna after.

But in 2017, again with my girlfriend, we went here from Manila in the morning and spent our day hopping to 4 restaurants we featured on my blog while my family enjoyed the Ride-All-You-Can promo they offered us.

How to get to Sky Ranch Tagaytay?

PITX to Tagaytay

Via public commute from Manila

There are buses bound to Nasugbu, Batangas that pass by Tagaytay City:
  • Uniwide Coastal Mall in Paranaque. Go to Paranaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX), also called South West Integrated Provincial Terminal. Board a bus bound for Tagaytay, Mendez (neighboring town), or Nasugbu. This bus will be taking Emilio Aguinaldo Highway.
  • DLTB Terminal at LRT Buendia area (near LRT Gil Puyat Station), Pasay City. Board the bus bound for either Nasugbu or Calatagan. This will be taking South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) and Carmona Exit and will pass through Tagaytay.
  • Tell the conductor you’re going to Sky Ranch. There’s a big chance the bus will not really pass by Sky Ranch because most buses take Mahogany Avenue, which bypasses a section of Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway approaching Mendez. Instead, they will drop you off at the Petron Gas Station.
  • Alight at Petron Gas Station adjacent Mahogany Avenue, opposite The Lake Hotel.
  • Walk to Sky Ranch. It’s a 20-minute walk.

Travel time: 2-3 hours, depending on traffic conditions. Might be much longer during rush hour.
Fare: P80.00-90.00.

Alternately, you can do the following:
  • If you drop off Olivarez/Rotonda, take a jeepney ride bound for Mendez/Alfonso. Tell the driver to drop you off at Skyranch. The jeepney fare is P10.
  • Get off right in front of Sky Ranch.

Via private vehicle

  • From Manila, drive through the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), then take Santa Rosa Exit or Eton City.
  • Continue driving along Santa Rosa-Tagaytay Road until you reach Tagaytay Rotunda.
  • From Tagaytay Rotunda, continue driving through Tagaytay-Nasugbu Highway until you reach Sky Ranch Tagaytay.

If you are driving your own car, you don’t have to worry about parking space. There are two areas for parking: the Main Parking, in front of the park, and the Annex Parking, located just across the street. Here are the rates:

When we say Tagaytay, this place shouldn't be missed when visiting the city.

Aside from People's Park In The Sky, one of Tagaytay’s most frequently visited landmarks is its famous Picnic Grove. This is one of the most common images that come to mind when Tagaytay is mentioned.

Picnic Grove Tagaytay in 2013

Sitting at the Tagaytay Ridge, it is one of the few spots where visitors can enjoy the view of the Taal Lake and the majestic Taal Volcano.

At Picnic Grove, visitors can enjoy relaxing activities such as taking a stroll through the trail or simply hanging out by their huts and taking in the picturesque view of Taal Lake and the majestic Taal Volcano.

The 13-hectare park is not only just for a picnic. It also offers various recreational activities. There are two zip lines and a hanging cable car, and visitors can take souvenir shots there.

ABOUT PICNIC GROVE

In 1956 -1964 during the presidencies of Carlos P. Garcia and Diosdado Macapagal, Tagaytay seek to promote a new image as the top tourist city. The 13 hectares Picnic Grove was built but was soon abandoned.

Between the period of 1970 to 1975 moneyed families in Manila started to build their weekend residences along the ridge. Picnic Grove was cleaned–up and refurbished.

On December 22, 1980 the City Government moved through the management of Picnic Grove to the National Government through the Department of Tourism’s and HSDC/SICOR/PTA.

Last 23 December 2005, after twenty five (25) years of managing the Picnic Grove the department of Tourism turned over the management back to the City Government of Tagaytay.

MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

It was in 2013 since I visited Picnic Grove with my siblings. It was my first time get there. Ever since I was in my younger age, I was dreaming of going to Tagaytay and see the majestic view of Taal Volcano and the lake.

The awesome view of Taal Lake and the Picnic Huts

One of most iconic views I always see is this one from Picnic Grove. So that day in February, I asked my girlfriend and my siblings to go here for a day tour.

We literally just walk around the area without trying some of the activities here. We bought a pack of espasol which is sold by some vendors inside.

Walking through Eco-Trail

Then, we just took photos, more photos while walking along the Eco-trail. Until we reached the view deck which wasn't looking nice that time. Some of the structures were worn out and not well-maintained I suppose.

Anyway, at least, I loved they pathways and the hanging bridge. Well, technically, it was not the amenities or the ambiance I was after for when we get here. Once I saw Taal from afar, I was satisfied. Knowing that this is the only volcano inside a lake inside an island in the Philippines (or even the world, I guess), it was perfectly enough to say, "it's a nice day".

After spending a few minutes (maybe an hour) here, we ate lunch at the nearby bulaluhan which is just across the entrance of the grove.

Then, we straight ahead to People's Park in the Sky that afternoon for another tour around the area. Without knowing much more in the city, we headed straight back to Laguna after we went to People's Park.

I came back here in November, same year, with my officemates. It was the same, just a little foggy compare to my first visit.
