Metro East will feel a little ease with this good news!

After five months of repair works by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Marcos Bridge along Marcos Highway in Marikina City is again fully-accessible to vehicles.

DPWH Secretary Mark A. Villar led on Thursday, October 31, 2019 the formal re-opening of both the eastbound and westbound side of newly strengthened Marcos Bridge which will benefit motorists and commuters from the eastern Metropolitan areas as they can now traverse the bridge without having to worry about its structural integrity.

Secretary Villar was joined in the event by DPWH NCR Director Ador Canlas, Marikina City Mayor Marcelino Teodoro, JH Pajara Construction President Jaime H. Pajara, and DPWH First Metro Manila District Engineer Medel Chua.

“As an integral access to Quezon City from the east of Rizal province, rehabilitation works on the bridge after its 40 years of service are necessary to ensure the safety and convenience of the public,” Secretary Villar said.

Due to the massive traffic congestion the construction caused, major repairs of the bridge were hastened.

Just this August, the second phase of the project have made the westbound lanes closed to traffic while the first phase, likewise, have made the eastbound lanes, closed to traffic last May 25.
“The rehabilitation was initially targeted to finish on April 2020 but considering the volume of motorists and commuters affected, the DPWH National Capital Region went 24/7 to finish the project as early as possible,” Villar said.

About Jones Bridge

The William A. Jones Memorial Bridge, commonly known as the Jones Bridge, is an arched girder bridge that spans the Pasig River in the City of Manila, Philippines. It is named after the United States legislator William Atkinson Jones, who served as the chairman of the U.S. Insular Affairs House Committee which had previously exercised jurisdiction over the Philippines and the principal author of the Jones Law that gave the country legislative autonomy from the United States.

Built to replace the historic Puente de España (Bridge of Spain) in the 1910s, the bridge connects Quintin Paredes Road at the Binondo district to Padre Burgos Avenue at the Ermita district.

Originally designed by Filipino architect Juan M. Arellano using French Neoclassical architecture, the first incarnation of the bridge features three arches resting on two heavy piers, adorned by faux-stone and concrete ornaments, as well as four sculptures on concrete plinths allegorically representing motherhood and nationhood.

The original bridge was destroyed during the World War II by retreating Japanese troops and was reconstructed in 1946 by the U.S. and Philippine public works. The reconstructed bridge retained the three arches and two piers but removed all of the ornaments.

The bridge was first partially restored in 1998. In 2019, the City Government of Manila began a rehabilitation project to "restore" the Jones Bridge to its near-original design using Beaux-Arts architecture similar to that of Pont Alexandre III in Paris and the return of all four La Madre Filipina sculptures.

Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar led the inauguration of the 419-meter, four-lane underpass that was constructed on Diversion Road in Barangay Gulang-Gulang this city.

Villar, who also led the official "drive-through" of the infrastructure project, said it took two years to be completed, with a total fund of PHP245 million.

He thanked Quezon 2nd District Rep. David Suarez for his help to finish the project.

Villar said the road project is part of President Rodrigo Duterte's “Build, Build, Build” program, rolls out road networks to decongest major roads and highways and to lessen travel time between provinces.

The underpass will benefit motorists traveling to Bicol region from Metro Manila and vice versa for they need not pass through the intersection of Diversion Road in the area, lessening travel time.

Motorists can now traverse the said flyover. The road bridge had a total length of 564 lineal meters, including approaches, and was the first flyover built in Imus City, Cavite.

The flyover, located in Barangay Anabu, is expected to ease traffic along the busy Aguinaldo Highway - Daanghari Road intersection, which is connected to roads that lead to the Cavite-Laguna Expressway.

The project was implemented by DPWH Regional Office IV-A headed by Regional Director Samson Hebra together with the Cavite 1st District Engineering Office.

"This is a vital project that will cut in half travel time of about 15 to 30 minutes from Daang-Hari Road - the main road to and from thickly populated Cavite and Metro Manila, going to Malagasang-Bucandala-Alapan Road," said Public Works Secretary Mark Villar.
