Today is Rizal Day. This is my tribute to Rizal's heroism and patriotism.

"Mi último adiós" (English: "My Last Farewell") is a poem written by Filipino propagandist and writer Dr. José Rizal before his execution by firing squad on December 30, 1896.

The piece was one of the last notes he wrote before his death. Another that he had written was found in his shoe, but because the text was illegible, its contents remain a mystery.

Rizal did not ascribe a title to his poem. Mariano Ponce, his friend and fellow reformist, titled it "Mi último pensamiento" ("My Last Thought") in the copies he distributed, but this did not catch on. Also, the "coconut oil lamp" containing the poem was not delivered to the Rizal's family until after the execution as it was required to light the cell.

Here's his great poem, " Mi Ultimo Adios " in three languages:

SPANISH VERSION (Original)

"Mi último adiós"
The original version by José Rizal

Otros te dan sus vidas sin dudas, sin pesar;
El sitio nada importa, ciprés, laurel o lirio,
Cadalso o campo abierto, combate o cruel martirio,

Y al fin anuncia el día tras lóbrego capuz;

Y al cielo tornen puras, con mi clamor en pos;

Por nuestras pobres madres que gimen su amargura;

Aroma, luz, colores, rumor, canto, gemido,

Dad gracias que descanso del fatigoso día;
Adiós, dulce extranjera, mi amiga, mi alegría,
Adiós, queridos seres, morir es descansar.

ENGLISH VERSION

"My Last Farewell"
The English translation by Encarnacion Alzona & Isidro Escare Abeto

Farewell, beloved Country, treasured region of the sun,
Pearl of the sea of the Orient, our lost Eden!
To you eagerly I surrender this sad and gloomy life;
And were it brighter, fresher, more florid,
Even then I’d give it to you, for your sake alone.

In fields of battle, deliriously fighting,
Others give you their lives, without doubt, without regret;
The place matters not: where there’s cypress, laurel or lily,
On a plank or open field, in combat or cruel martyrdom,
It’s all the same if the home or country asks.

I die when I see the sky has unfurled its colors
And at last after a cloak of darkness announces the day;
If you need scarlet to tint your dawn,
Shed my blood, pour it as the moment comes,
And may it be gilded by a reflection of the heaven’s newly-born light.

My dreams, when scarcely an adolescent,
My dreams, when a young man already full of life,
Were to see you one day, jewel of the sea of the Orient,
Dry those eyes of black, that forehead high,
Without frown, without wrinkles, without stains of shame.

My lifelong dream, my deep burning desire,
This soul that will soon depart cries out: Salud!
To your health! Oh how beautiful to fall to give you flight,
To die to give you life, to die under your sky,
And in your enchanted land eternally sleep.

If upon my grave one day you see appear,
Amidst the dense grass, a simple humble flower,
Place it near your lips and my soul you’ll kiss,
And on my brow may I feel, under the cold tomb,
The gentle blow of your tenderness, the warmth of your breath.

Let the moon see me in a soft and tranquil light,
Let the dawn send its fleeting radiance,
Let the wind moan with its low murmur,
And should a bird descend and rest on my cross,
Let it sing its canticle of peace.

Let the burning sun evaporate the rains,
And with my clamor behind, towards the sky may they turn pure;
Let a friend mourn my early demise,
And in the serene afternoons, when someone prays for me,
O Country, pray to God also for my rest!

Pray for all the unfortunate ones who died,
For all who suffered torments unequaled,
For our poor mothers who in their grief and bitterness cry,
For orphans and widows, for prisoners in torture,
And for yourself pray that your final redemption you’ll see.

And when the cemetery is enveloped in dark night,
And there, alone, only those who have gone remain in vigil,
Disturb not their rest, nor the mystery,
And should you hear chords from a zither or psaltery,
It is I, beloved Country, singing to you.

And when my grave, then by all forgotten,
has not a cross nor stone to mark its place,
Let men plow and with a spade scatter it,
And before my ashes return to nothing,
May they be the dust that carpets your fields.

Then nothing matters, cast me in oblivion.
Your atmosphere, your space and valleys I’ll cross.
I will be a vibrant and clear note to your ears,
Aroma, light, colors, murmur, moan, and song,
Constantly repeating the essence of my faith.

My idolized country, sorrow of my sorrows,
Beloved Filipinas, hear my last good-bye.
There I leave you all, my parents, my loves.
I’ll go where there are no slaves, hangmen nor oppressors,
Where faith doesn’t kill, where the one who reigns is God.

Goodbye, dear parents, brother and sisters, fragments of my soul,
Childhood friends in the home now lost,
Give thanks that I rest from this wearisome day;
Goodbye, sweet foreigner, my friend, my joy;
Farewell, loved ones, to die is to rest.

FILIPINO / TAGALOG VERSION

"Pahimakas ni Dr. Jose Rizal"
Tagalog translation by Andrés Bonifacio

Pinipintuho kong Bayan ay paalam,
Lupang iniirog ng sikat ng araw,
mutyang mahalaga sa dagat Silangan,
kaluwalhatiang sa ami'y pumanaw.
Masayang sa iyo'y aking idudulot
ang lanta kong buhay na lubhang malungkot;
maging maringal man at labis alindog

Saan man mautas ay dikailangan,

gabahid man dungis niyong kahihiyan.

Sa kabuhayang ko ang laging gunita
maningas na aking ninanasa-nasa
ay guminhawa ka ang hiyas ng diwa
hingang papanaw ngayong biglang-bigla.
pag hingang papanaw ngayong biglang-bigla.

Ikaw'y guminhawa laking kagandahang

at dalitin niya payapang panahon.

Bayaan ang ningas ng sikat ng araw
ula'y pasingawin noong kainitan,
magbalik sa langit ng boong dalisay
kalakip ng aking pagdaing na hiyaw.

Bayaang sino man sa katotang giliw
tangisang maagang sa buhay pagkitil;
kung tungkol sa akin ay may manalangin
idalangin, Bayan, yaring pagka himbing.

Idalanging lahat yaong nangamatay,
mangagatiis hirap na walang kapantay;
mga ina naming walang kapalaran
na inihihibik ay kapighatian.

Ang mga bao't pinapangulila,
ang mga bilanggong nagsisipagdusa;
dalanginin namang kanilang makita
ang kalayaan mong, ikagiginhawa.

At kung an madilim na gabing mapanglaw
ay lumaganap na doon sa libinga't
tanging mga patay ang nangaglalamay,
huwag bagabagin ang katahimikan.

Ang kanyang hiwagay huwag gambalain;

lupa'y asarolin at kauyang ikalat.

Bayang iniirog, sakit niyaring hirap,
Katagalugang ko pinakaliliyag,
dinggin mo ang aking pagpapahimakas;

walang umiinis at berdugong hayop;
pananalig doo'y di nakasasalot,
si Bathala lamang dooy haring lubos.

Paalam, magulang at mga kapatid
kapilas ng aking kaluluwa't dibdib
mga kaibigan bata pang maliit
sa aking tahanan di na masisilip.

Pag pasasalamat at napahinga rin,
paalam estranherang kasuyo ko't aliw,
paalam sa inyo, mga ginigiliw;
mamatay ay siyang pagkakagupiling!

ABOUT CAVITE (PROVINCE)

Cavite, officially the Province of Cavite (Tagalog: Lalawigan ng Kabite; Chabacano: Provincia de Cavite), is one of the 5 provinces in Calabarzon region in Luzon, Philippines.

Located on the southern shores of Manila Bay and southwest of Manila, it is one of the most industrialized and fastest-growing provinces in the Philippines.

The de facto capital and seat of the government of the province is Trece Martires, although Imus is the official (de jure) capital.

Loading...

For over 300 years, the province played an important role in both the country's colonial past and eventual fight for independence, earning it the title "Historical Capital of the Philippines". It became the cradle of the Philippine Revolution, which led to the renouncement of Spanish colonial control, finally culminating in the Philippine Declaration of Independence on June 12, 1898 in Kawit.

The old provincial capital, Cavite City also hosted docks for the Manila galleon, becoming an essential part of commerce between Asia and Latin America.

Originally an agricultural province, its northern cities of Bacoor, Imus, and Dasmariñas are now suburbs of Manila due to increasing urbanization in the late 1900s. This province forms part of the Greater Manila Area.

LEARN HISTORY AT CORREGIDOR (Cavite City)

Ruins at Corregidor

Corregidor
is an island located at the entrance of Manila Bay in the southwestern part of Luzon in the Philippines. Due to this location, Corregidor has historically been fortified with coastal artillery batteries to defend the entrance of Manila Bay and Manila itself from attacks by enemy warships.

Corregidor (Fort Mills) is the largest of the islands that formed the harbor defenses of Manila Bay, together with El Fraile Island (Fort Drum), Caballo Island (Fort Hughes), and Carabao Island (Fort Frank), which were all fortified during the American colonial period.

One thing not to miss during your stay on this island is to explore the Malinta Tunnel. it is a tunnel complex built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers on the island of Corregidor in the Philippines. It was initially used as a bomb-proof storage and personnel bunker, but was later equipped as a 1,000-bed hospital.

The main tunnel, running east to west, is 831 feet (253 m) long, 24 feet (7.3 m) wide and 18 feet (5.5 m) high. Branching off from this main shaft are 13 lateral tunnels on the north side and 11 lateral tunnels on the south side. Each lateral averaged 160 feet (49 m) in length and 15 feet (4.6 m) in width.

APPRECIATE INDEPENDENCE AT AGUINALDO SHRINE (Kawit)

The Emilio Aguinaldo Shrine is a national shrine located in Kawit, Cavite in the Philippines, where the Philippine Declaration of Independence from Spain was declared on June 12, 1898.

To commemorate the event, now known as Araw ng Kalayaan or Independence Day, a national holiday, the Philippine flag is raised here by top government officials on June 12 each year. The house is now a museum.

EXPLORE TAGAYTAY CITY  (Tagaytay City)

Tagaytay serves as the main tourist center in the province. For a chill traveler like me, I chose to discover new things in a city or a place where there's a lot to offer. Plus, Tagaytay gives you a cool and bed-weather temperature, makes me want to have hot coffee or hot choco in the afternoon.

This city is filled with magnificent view of Taal (lake and volcano), variety of food, classy hotels, cozy staycation, overwhelming malls and supermarkets. You won't run out of activities here!

You can go to Sky Ranch for amusements, Picnic Grove for sightseeing and zipline, Paradizoo for themed-farm experience, Crosswinds for Swiss-like dining and more.

But most of the time, people come here to see Taal. Here are some of establishments where you can have a great view of Taal lake and volcano:

SPOT THE BEST BULALO IN TOWN (Mostly in Tagaytay)

Of course, one of the best food trips in Cavite is to find best-tasting bulalo!

UNWIND AT RIVERFRONT GARDEN RESORT (Maragondon)

In 1996, Riverfront Garden Resort was still barren land that was beside the river, it was bought by a German retired businessman for his beloved wife as a gift of their love. It started out as the Missus private farm, where she planted a thousand of her favorite mahogany tree.

A few years later, their children grew up and the couple built a small Hansel and Gretel house in the middle of the one (1) hectare property. It was created similar to the children favorite fairytale. It became the children’s playhouse whenever they felt like a time away from home. The kids grew up and once again the land had been left unused and cared for by their caretakers. It was almost sold a few times, but due to its sentimental value, the couple could never let it go.

Nestled in the outlying areas of Maragondon, Cavite, this resort is an especially unique accommodation that gives you the true sense of a retreat with its native-style cottages amid a serene forested land.

It has 3 man-made pools in which 2 of it is facing the riverside, that makes it more unique and breathtaking.

WHERE TO EAT IN CAVITE

Here's a list of restaurants I have visited in Cavite:

TRANSPORTATION IN CAVITE

Just like the Metro Manila, Cavite's mode of transportation is mostly via public utility vehicle such as jeepneys (PUJ) and buses (PUB). Some of the inner areas of each cities and municipalities use tricycle as an alternative transportation.

The biggest change in Cavite's transportation is the extension of LRT1 where it caters some of entry points in Bacoor.

Emilio Aguinaldo Highway

Aguinaldo Highway, also known as Cavite–Batangas Road and Cavite-Manila South Road, is a four-to-six lane, 41.4-kilometer, the most commonly used road in Cavite.

Cavite's transport infrastructure has not kept in pace with the mushrooming of industrial and commercial activities resulting to quilts of urban sprawl, traffic congestion and increased road accidents. The section of Aguinaldo Highway (in Bacoor, Imus and Dasmarinas) serving as a major link between the province and the national capital Manila is currently experiencing traffic volume 20% in excess of its designed capacity.

Some of the expressways you can use going to, from and around Cavite are the SLEX, CALAX and CAVITEX.

Main terminal of transportation to Cavite is found at PITX.

These places in Manila City will bring you to Europe without the need of passport or visa!

The City of Manila once called the "Paris of Asia" before I was born. However, time past and the beautiful city was challenged with war and industrialization.

Manila was reconstructed in time and most of its parts were forgotten and taken for granted. Squatters, dark and full of garbage canals, polluted air, bad traffic, damaged Manila Bay, over population, name it - Manila has become one of the worst cities in the world.

Manila City Today

Huge thanks to todays Manila City Mayor Francisco 'Isko Moreno' Domagoso for his initiatives in rehabilitating the whole city. I have never seen Manila as clean and stunning before.

On his first day as a mayor, Yorme Isko lead the clean-up drive to some crowded places in Manila - especially, Divisoria. I've visited Divisoria and Binondo last February and I was complete in awe to what I saw. It's given that these places are most crowded of all in Manila since they houses most of tiangge and establishments people from all over Metro and Greater Manila Areas are coming for. But these places look really different today as compare to the time of my visit during pre-Isko.

Roads are open and wide, people are walking in the pedestrian, vendors have their own authorized location, I've never felt safe until my last visit in 2020.

Before traveling, you might want to check the live weather forecast and updates to make your trip even easier and safer for you. You can also get the latest report for land traffic in Metro Manila and major parts of the Philippines.

Since then, people near Manila are more interested to visit the city and explore it once more! So in this blog, we feature 20+ places to visit in Manila especially at night:
