The Batangas-Mindoro super bridge project was proposed by Oriental Mindoro Representative Alfonso Umali Jr. in 2015 and is being pushed by Governor Humerlito Dolor to spur growth and development in Oriental Mindoro and the rest of MIMAROPA region after the pandemic.

“We have started bringing together global experts across disciplines, including a European architectural and engineering firm, to do a technical feasibility study on how the bridge can be built sustainably to benefit both people and the environment,” SMC president and chief executive Ramon Ang said in a statement.

“We thank Governor Dolor for pursuing this game-changing project and considering our company to be able to deliver a world-class bridge. It has faced a series of setbacks over the years but we hope that, together, we can finally bring the vision to fruition,” Ang added.

Say 'goodbye' to long travel from South to North!

Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge being built on Manila Bay, Philippines, to reduce the travel time from Bataan to Cavite from five hours to 40 minutes.

The project is being developed by the Republic of the Philippines’ Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) with an estimated investment of $3.6bn. It is a priority project under the government’s Build, Build, Build (BBB) programme that aims to boost the country’s economic growth through increased investments in public infrastructure.

The National Economic Development Authority Board approved the project in January 2020. Bridge construction began in November 2020 and is expected to be completed in January 2022.

The bridge will permanently connect the provinces in Central Luzon and Southern Tagalog region, reducing the travel time and alleviating traffic congestion in Metro Manila.4

Bataan-Cavite bridge design and construction

The design of the bridge has been drawn from the sea, surrounding mountains, and Manila’s skyline. The 32.15km-long Bataan-Cavite bridge is being constructed with two lanes in each direction, connecting Bataan and Cavite provinces, located northwest and southwest of the capital Manila.

“The project will involve the construction of two cable-stayed navigation bridges, the North Channel Bridge with a main span of 400m and the South Channel Bridge with a 900m main span.”

The bridge will start at Barangay Alas-asin in Mariveles, Bataan, crossing Manila Bay, and terminating at Barangay Timalan in Naic, Cavite.

The project will involve the construction of two cable-stayed navigation bridges, the North Channel Bridge with a main span of 400m and the South Channel Bridge with a 900m main span, standing at a water depth of approximately 50m. Land viaducts, marine viaducts, and ancillary buildings will also be constructed under the project.

The four-lane cable-stayed bridge will stretch 17km between Cavite and Corregidor and 4km between Bataan and Corregidor and will be the longest bridge in the Philippines.

After reaching Corregidor, the bridge will transition into a tunnel and leave the surface of the historic island, allowing the development of a stopover from the high-speed train for easy access.

Project benefits

The new signature bridge will provide a significant transportation corridor for the Philippines and drive new economic growth for the country. It will ease traffic on the North Luzon Expressway.

The project will help to transform the regional economies of Cavite, Bataan and provinces located further north of Bataan through improved connectivity, new economic opportunities and jobs.

The bridge will also provide opportunities for new expansion and economic growth outside Manila such as the development of seaports in Cavite and Bataan as major international shipping gateways to the Philippines.

Financing for the Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge

Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $200m loan as additional financing for the Infrastructure Preparation and Innovation Facility for the project in December 2019. It is also preparing to support the financing for the construction of the project in 2022.

Kalayaan Bridge opened on Independence Day

Pasig River, pristine in the time and writings of national hero Jose Rizal but long since polluted and considered biologically dead, may finally have a real shot at being revived, thanks to a P95.40 billion plan to build the Pasig River Expressway (PAREX).

The PAREx Project

The project, now under government review, has been proposed by San Miguel Corporation, known for taking on challenging, large-scale infrastructure projects and environmental initiatives.

SMC president and COO Ramon S. Ang said that the PAREX project represents a “solution within a solution”—a means to solve Metro Manila traffic, with minimal disruption on existing cities and roads, with a built-in solution to clean up and improve the flow of water throughout the entire length of the Pasig River.

“Of all the projects we have done, this will perhaps be among the most challenging, and at the same time, the most fulfilling. Not only will we be building a much-needed direct link between eastern and western Metro Manila, but we will also be leading a historic effort to bring the Pasig River back to health,” Ang added.

PASIG RIVER REHABILITATION

Ang explained that to build the 19.40-kilometer, six-lane elevated expressway along the banks of the river, the river bed has to be dredged and cleared of decades of debris and garbage, to attain its optimum depth and ensure the constant flow of water. This, he added, will also help address flooding in Metro Manila.

“For so many decades, even when I was young, the Pasig River had been synonymous to pollution. Many Filipinos have long wanted to clean it and revive it, bring it back to its old glory. There were even high-profile fund-raising projects and similar initiatives to clean it. But unfortunately, not much has changed,” Ang said.

Early this year, SMC started a P1-billion corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative to clean up the Tullahan-Tinajeros River System as part of a wide-ranging plan to support the government cleanup of the Manila Bay , and address perennial flooding in low-lying areas such as Bulacan and other Central Luzon provinces. The company has been removing some 600 tons of solid waste from the river every day.

PAREX TO CONNECT R10 TO C6

The Pasig River Expressway, which will start from Radial Road 10 (R10) in the City of Manila and end at a connection to the South East Metro Manila Expressway (SEMME), otherwise known as Circumferential Road 6 (C6), is seen to reduce travel time from Manila to Rizal to just 15 minutes.

From R10, or the port area, it will have entry and exit points at the University Belt area, San Juan, Buendia, Mandaluyong, Makati, Rockwell, Edsa, Pioneer St., Bonifacio Global City, C5, before terminating at C6.

It is seen to provide an alternative and faster access to the country’s largest business districts—Makati, Ortigas, and BGC.

Along with the PAREX project, SMC is also proposing to build the 420-kilometer, four-lane South Luzon Expressway Toll Road 5 (SLEX-TR5) project which extends the SLEX and SLEX-TR4 project from Lucena, Quezon to Matnog, Sorsogon.

Both projects are under a proposed Build-Operate-Transfer scheme for a concession of just 30 years, after which government takes over the vital infrastructure assets.

The final design of the 3.7-kilometer Panguil Bay Bridge in Northern Mindanao will be ready  December this year with actual construction expected to begin early next year.

The Department of Public Work Highways (DPWH) recently announced they are now conducting a geotechnical survey to finalize the design of the P7.375-billion Bridge.

Undersecretary Emil Sadain disclosed from 45, they are now down to about 23 more borehole test analyses to ensure reliable reference for the final design of  the bridge.

“The result of the geotechnical investigation onshore and offshore as well as bathymetric data from the study of the underwater depth of ocean floors is vital to ensuring that the Panguil Bay Bridge is built on good foundations with high strength to weight ratio,” Sadain said.

THE LONGEST BRIDGE IN THE PHILIPPINES

Once completed, Panguil Bay Bridge will be the longest bridge in the Philippines, overtaking San Juanico Bridge in Eastern Visayas which spans 2.164 kilometers.

Through the Panguil Bay Bridge, land travel between Tangub City, Misamis Occidental and Tubod, Lanao del Norte is expected to be reduced from two and a half hours to just seven minutes.

“Panguil Bay Bridge is a realization of the promise to make Filipinos even more connected by building a mega bridge that will provide convenient inter-island travel in the archipelagic topography of Northern Mindanao,” Public Works and Highways Secretary Mark Villar said.

The project is funded by a loan agreement between the Philippine government and Korean Export Import Bank.
