A credit card is more than just a financial tool that allows you to make purchases even without cash on hand; it can also give you various rewards and perks for additional savings. These credit card rewards can usually be claimed or redeemed after you accumulate points per purchase. Some of the most common credit card rewards that can be claimed include cash vouchers, straight discounts, cashback credits, and waived membership fees.

However, because it takes quite some time to rack up those points, it’s a good idea to know where to use your current credit card so you can maximize points accumulation. Here are a few suggestions.

Loading...

1. Groceries

For most Filipino families, groceries take up a huge chunk of the monthly budget. Fortunately, you can use your credit card to help out with your grocery expenses and earn more points at the same time. Many credit card providers partner up with supermarkets to offer discounts if you use your credit card to pay for your groceries and earn more points at the same time. This allows you to accumulate more rewards, which you can then redeem for discount vouchers to be used on your next grocery trip.

Using a credit card that offers cashback credits as part of its rewards program can also help you maximize your card’s value and save up more. The Landers Cashback Everywhere Credit Card by Maya, for instance, can give you up to 5% cashback when you shop at any Landers Superstore when you meet certain requirements. What’s more, every eligible purchase you make with your Landers credit card also earns cashback rewards, so even some of your non-grocery purchases can still help you save on your grocery expenses.

2. Online Shopping

One of the most common uses of credit cards nowadays is for online shopping because it provides a quick and secure way to complete purchases. Thanks to this trend, you can rack up more rewards as you shop online. This could either come in the form of additional cashback rewards or discount vouchers that you can redeem using your credit card points. You may also enjoy bigger discounts from your credit card’s partner merchants.

What’s more, some online shopping platforms offer payment options such as 0% interest installments for particular credit cards. This could be a huge relief on your budget if you happen to be making a high-value purchase online such as appliances or gadgets. Always check with the online store you’re purchasing from which credit cards qualify for this payment option so you can lighten the burden of your next big purchase.

3. Dining

If you happen to be the type who enjoys dining out with family and friends, you can use your credit card to pay the bill to earn more rewards points. The previously mentioned Landers Cashback Everywhere credit card by Maya, for example, gives you 2% cashback on any dining spend. Check with your credit card provider to get a list of their partner dining establishments, as these places will usually offer you more points and bigger discounts upfront if you pay using the corresponding credit card.
Do make sure to check the mechanics that come with the discount, however. In some cases, a partner restaurant may only offer it for certain dishes or after you spend a minimum amount. Some restaurant discounts may also be available for a limited time only, so make sure you’re dining within the validity period of the promo.

There are also credit cards that classify dining expenses as one of their bonus spending categories. Hence, points earned from dining can be doubled or even tripled, allowing you to save up more points that you can exchange for other rewards.

4. Health and Wellness

Various health and wellness centers are also affiliated with credit card providers, allowing you to enjoy bigger discounts and more points. So the next time you want to pamper yourself, you can simply use your card to pay for a relaxing me-time at your favorite spa or salon. As a bonus, you can also rack up rewards that you can redeem for future treatment sessions.

5. Travel

Last but not least, your credit card can also give you big savings and big rewards when you use it for your travel expenses. Before you start booking flights or accommodations, check first which airlines, booking websites, and hotels your credit card provider has a partnership with to see if you qualify for additional points, bigger cashback rewards, or straight discounts. Some of the perks you may also enjoy depending on your credit card include unlimited lounge access, exclusive access to seat sales, and free travel insurance.

If you want to fly for free, then you can do so through air miles. As with reward points, all you have to do is to keep using your credit card to steadily accumulate redeemable points. If you’re someone who travels frequently, then you can even score more savings by joining airline loyalty programs.

With the right knowledge on how and where to use your credit card rewards, you can enjoy your perks to the fullest and even reduce your expenses at the same time. Always be on the lookout for any changes in your credit card provider’s rewards catalog and don’t forget to check out the categories listed above to get the most out of your rewards points.

Starting October 1, 2024, parking at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) will become significantly more expensive.

In a recent announcement by NAIA’s Leasing and Commercial Affairs Department, overnight parking fees for cars will jump from P300 to P1,200—a fourfold increase. The new rates will also affect motorcycles and buses, with overnight parking set at P480 for motorcycles and P2,400 for buses.

Loading...

New Parking Rates at NAIA

All four terminals of NAIA have parking. Terminals 1, 2, and 4 have open ones, while Terminal 3 has multi-level covered parking. Here are the new parking rates starting October 1, 2024:

Cars
  • First two hours – P50
  • Succeeding hour – P25 per hour
  • Overnight – P1,200

Motorcycles
  • First two hours – P20
  • Succeeding hour – P10 per hour
  • Overnight – P480

Buses
  • First two hours – P100
  • Succeeding hour – P50 per hour
  • Overnight – P2,400

New NAIA Parking Fee Rates

A 10-minute grace period will be allowed. If you exceed 24-hour increments, additional hourly rates will apply. For lost tickets, a P500 fee will be charged on top of the parking cost.

Prior to this change, overnight parking used to only cost P300 as of 2022.

Why the Steep Price Hike?

According to the memo, the drastic adjustments are necessary “to ensure continued maintenance and improvements” at the airport's parking facilities. However, details on what specific improvements are planned remain unclear. Passengers and airport workers alike are hopeful that the higher fees will translate to tangible upgrades beyond cosmetic changes like fresh paint or new signage.

Time to Reconsider Your Airport Commute

With these steep new rates in place, travelers may need to rethink how they get to NAIA. Carpooling, ride-hailing services, or asking friends or family members for a drop-off could be more cost-effective alternatives to parking your vehicle overnight.

Pandas, with their fluffy fur, expressive eyes, and clumsy antics, have captivated hearts worldwide. But beyond their irresistible charm, these creatures boast fascinating traits and habits that make them truly unique.

Where Are Pandas Found?

Pandas, specifically giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca), are native to China and are found primarily in the mountainous regions of central China.

Their natural habitats include:

  • Sichuan Province: This is home to the majority of the wild panda population and the famous Wolong National Nature Reserve.

  • Shaanxi Province: The Qinling Mountains host a smaller population of pandas, slightly different in appearance with a brownish tint to their fur.

  • Gansu Province: Some pandas also reside in the Minshan Mountains in this region.

A statue of a lying Panda taking a selfie in Sichuan Province, China

Pandas live in dense bamboo forests at elevations between 1,200 and 3,100 meters (4,000 to 10,000 feet). These forests provide the bamboo they rely on for survival.

Loading...

Who Are Their Ancestors?

The giant panda's evolutionary history is both fascinating and mysterious. Pandas belong to the bear family (Ursidae) but have unique traits that set them apart.

Their ancestry reveals a remarkable journey through time:

Miocene Era (7–8 Million Years Ago)
The giant panda’s closest ancient relative is Ailurarctos, a bear species that lived in China around 8 million years ago. Fossil evidence suggests that Ailurarctos might have been the first bear to develop a taste for bamboo.

Red Panda Connection?
While giant pandas share a name and bamboo diet with red pandas, they are not closely related. Red pandas belong to a different family (Ailuridae), and their similarities are due to convergent evolution rather than shared ancestry.

Modern Bear Relatives
The giant panda's closest living relatives are other members of the bear family, particularly spectacled bears (Tremarctos ornatus), which are native to South America.

10 Interesting Facts About Pandas

Here are ten fun facts about pandas that will deepen your appreciation for these bamboo-loving bears.

1. Pandas Are Born Tiny and Pink

When baby pandas are born, they weigh only about 100 grams (the size of a stick of butter) and are completely pink, hairless, and blind. This makes them one of the most underdeveloped mammal babies relative to their adult size!

2. Bamboo Makes Up 99% of Their Diet

Despite being classified as carnivores, pandas have an herbivorous diet, with bamboo making up almost their entire menu. They consume 12–38 kilograms (26–84 pounds) of bamboo daily to meet their energy needs.

3. Pandas Have a "Sixth Finger"

To help grasp bamboo stalks, pandas evolved a pseudo-thumb. This extra appendage is an extended wrist bone that functions like a thumb, making them expert bamboo eaters.

4. They Are Excellent Tree Climbers

Young pandas are agile climbers and often escape predators by scurrying up trees. Adults may climb for food, rest, or safety, showing a surprising level of dexterity despite their bulk.

5. Pandas Spend Most of Their Time Eating or Sleeping

Pandas spend up to 14 hours a day eating and the rest sleeping. Their bamboo diet is low in nutrients, so they conserve energy by being less active.

6. Panda Fur Is Not Just for Show

The black-and-white coat of a panda serves two purposes: camouflage and communication. The white fur helps them blend into snowy habitats, while the black patches around their eyes and ears signal to others to stay away.

7. Pandas Were Once Meat Eaters

Millions of years ago, pandas were carnivorous. Over time, they adapted to a plant-based diet due to environmental changes. However, their digestive systems still resemble those of meat-eating animals.

8. Panda Cubs Love Somersaults

Playful by nature, panda cubs often practice their acrobatic skills by tumbling and rolling around. This not only entertains visitors but also helps the cubs build strength and coordination.

9. Pandas Are Solitary Animals

In the wild, pandas prefer a solitary life, coming together only during the mating season. Each panda occupies its own territory and marks it with a unique scent.

10. They Are a Symbol of Conservation

Pandas were once critically endangered due to habitat loss and low reproduction rates. Thanks to concerted global conservation efforts, their status has improved to “vulnerable.” The panda has become a global icon for wildlife preservation.
