Here's How to Pay PhilHealth Contributions Online (Step-by-step Guide)

Here's how much you can get from SSS Maternity Benefits (and how to compute it).

Last March 11, 2019, the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law (RA 11210 or EML) which extends the paid maternity leave to 105 days or up to 3 months, started to take effect as signed by former president, Rodrigo R. Duterte.

MATERNITY & BABY ESSENTIALS

Here are some of the things you need for your pregnancy and for your newborn:
Shopee is my go-to app for things I needed like the ones above. If you'd like discounts and vouchers, you may get the best offers here:

Who are entitled to receive Maternity Leave benefits?

  • Female workers in public and private sectors regardless of civil status (Single or Married).
  • Self-employed/Voluntary/OFW SSS members.
  • Terminated employees who had childbirth or miscarriage for not more than 15 days after her service is terminated.
  • Solo parents.
  • Female athletes.
  • Women who had emergency termination of pregnancy or miscarriage.

What are the requirements?

  • Employees or self-employed women should have paid at least 3 months of SSS contributions for the last 12 months before their delivery or emergency termination of pregnancy or miscarriage.
  • Female employees who are non-SSS members will be covered through PhilHealth Circular No. 022-2014 or the "Social Health Insurance Coverage and Benefits for Women About to Give Birth".
  • Ask for other requirements or forms needed by your employer or company.

When can you start availing for Maternity Leave?

  • The earliest time is 45 days before the expected date of delivery.
  • The latest time is 60 days after delivery.

How Much is the SSS Maternity Benefit Payout?

With the Expanded Maternity Leave Law eligible SSS members may receive maternity benefits of up to ₱80,000. The maximum benefit applies to members with a monthly salary credit (MSC) of ₱20,000 (those earning ₱19,750 and above per month).

Maternity Benefits Computation

Total amount of SSS maternity benefit = (Average monthly salary credit ÷ 180) x Number of paid leave days

The following are the methods to figure out your SSS maternity benefits using the calculation above:

1. Do not include the semester in which you give birth or have a miscarriage in your calculations.

For example, if your delivery date is June 2021, exclude the months of January to June 2021.

2. Count backwards from the month before the semester of delivery or miscarriage by 12 months.

The 12-month period is from January to December 2020, according to our example given above.

3. Get the total monthly salary credit or MSC of the 12 month period.

For assistance in locating your MSC, see the table of SSS contributions. For instance, if your monthly pay is PHP 30,000 from January to December 2020, your MSC is PHP 20,000. PHP 120,000 would be the total of your six highest MSCs that is: PHP 20,000 x 6.

4. Determine your average daily salary credit or ADSC.

To calculate your daily maternity allowance, divide your average MSC by 180 days. Based on our example earlier, your ADSC is PHP 666.67 if your MSC is on average PHP 120,000 each year.

5. Get the total amount of your SSS maternity benefit.

To calculate your total SSS maternity benefit, multiply your ADSC by the number of days you'll be out of work while you're pregnant. Normal or caesarean delivery lasts 105 days, 120 days for single parents, and 60 days for miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth. If you want to provide your leave credits to the child's father or another caregiver, you must deduct seven days from your total leave credits.

ACTIVITIES AND TOURS IN MANILA

Maternity Benefits Sample Computation

To help you out, here is a sample computation of your SSS maternity benefit if your salary is in the maximum MSC of PHP 20,000:
  • For normal/caesarian delivery: (PHP 120,000 ÷ 180) x 105 days = PHP 70,000
  • For solo parents:  (PHP 120,000 ÷ 180) x 120 days = PHP 80,000
  • For miscarriage/abortion/stillbirth: (PHP 120,000 ÷ 180) x 60 days =  PHP 40,000

Note that you should also receive your full pay for the entire duration of your maternity leave. The Expanded Maternity Leave Law requires employers to pay for the salary differential, which is the difference between their covered employees' full salary and the actual cash benefit from the SSS.

What to Expect for Nasugbu

Nasugbu is known for its array of beaches with azure blue waters. Its proximity to the metropolis is one of the reasons it is popular, but Nasugbu’s beaches are already so well-known by themselves that the place makes a compelling case as a summer destination.

A nice day at Calayo Beach

Personally, I've been to Nasugbu a few times. In 2019, I brought my family and friends to Pico de Loro (Hamilo Coast) for a chill stay. Early this year, my family went for a 4-day vacation to Calayo Beach.

Best Time to Visit Nasugbu

Nasugbu is open all year round but the best time to visit is during summer. This is from March to May. Due to its proximity to Manila, expect crowded beach even during off season. I recommend to schedule your trip during weekdays.

Nasugbu Tourist Spots

Here are the most-visited places in Nasugbu, Batangas:

NASUGBU MOUNTAINS

There are two famous mountains in Nasugbu that many are hiking for: Mount Batulao & Mount Talamitam. Both are not hard for beginners that's why even non-mountaineers are fond of going to their peaks.

Mt. Batulao

Mt. Batulao has a total trail length of 12 kilometers and it will take around 5 to 6 hours to finish the climb depending on your pace. The trail is an up and down pattern with moderately steep terrain and open slopes.

Mount Batulao

You can choose between the Old Trail and New Trail of which path you'll take, but most hikers traverse to experience both trails. It has Scenic view of the coastal towns of Batangas.

Jump-off: KC Hillcrest Golf Course (Evercrest)
Day Tour: Klook offers private and group day tour to Mt. Batulao for as low as P1,500 per head

Mt. Talamitam

Mt. Talamitam is relatively easier compared to Mt. Batulao, but the climb can be hard during summer when the sun is high because there are few trees for shade.

Mt. Talamitam

The way to the peak can be challenging because of the steep assault, especially if you take the short route. The hike can take an hour and a half to two and a half hours.

Jump-off: Sitio Bayabasan in Barangay Aga, also known as KM 83

NASUGBU ISLANDS

This town in Batangas is known for having beautiful islands. They are usually flocked by beach lovers and campers, too.

Fortune Island

Back in 1995, Fortune Island was a 27-hectare private luxury island resort located 14 kilometers off the coast of Nasugbu. It is famous for its collapsing Grecian statues and the iconic pillars overlooking the sea, inspired by the Acropolis in Athens, Greece.

Fortune Island

Aside from the beauty of its abandoned structures, the island has a 20-meter stretch of pristine white-sand beach.

Jump-off: Fortune Island Resort, Brgy. Wawa, Nasugbu, Batangas
Day Tour: Klook offers private and group day tour to Mt. Batulao for as low as P1,500 per head

Pulo Island

Known to locals as Pulo Island or Pulo-pulo, Loren Island is like that one person who is easy to get along with yet still retain some kind of mystery; she will intrigue you. The island has two beaches and what looks like a sandbar that links to another rocky islet.

Pulo Islands

The cove part is welcoming with its mixture of fine and course beige sand, but the sloping beach just beside the cove and the beach behind will either intimidate you or challenge you with their rugged appearance highlighted by the rocky shores and unspoiled islet.

Location: Calayo, Nasugbu, Batangas

NASUGBU BEACHES

Being one of Batangas coastal towns, Nasugbu boasts a list of beaches and coves that you definitely should not miss to visit! Nasugbu is also known for having white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

Calayo Beach

Calayo is a fishing village in Nasugbu that draws visitors looking for a serene getaway. Sandy Calayo Beach has calm, shallow waters, and the lush hills of Sitio Hulo offer scenic views.

Laid-back beachfront resorts overlooking the West Philippine Sea feature restaurants with local seafood specials. There are also unpretentious shops and eateries along Calayo Road.

Note: Calayo Beach I am pertaining on this article is the exact beach cove in Brgy. Calayo, NOT the Calayo Beach Resort which is a resort accommodation in Calayo.

Bituin Cove

Bituin Cove, also known as Angara Cove, is also privately-owned. Like Pulo Island, it is also open to the public. If Loren Island is popular among locals and daytrippers, Bituin Cove attracts campers.

Bituin Cove

You may bring your own tent or you can rent there. You can also bring your own snorkeling gear. There’s a small stall selling snacks, but it’s best to bring your own food. Please observe proper garbage disposal.

Entrance Fee: P25
Tent Rental: P300
Camping Fee: P100
Jump-off: Calayo, Nasugbu, Batangas

Tali Beach

Tali Beach is basically one whole exclusive seaside subdivision in Nasugbu, so it has less crowd. Enjoy the peace and quiet of the beaches or go cliff jumping. You cannot get in unless you know someone or you are a homeowner.

Tali Beach

The good news is that most of the property there are rest houses, so some of the owners rent out their property. You can contact them directly and book in advance before going there.

Book a stay: Find an Airbnb or house for rent.

Layag-Layag Beach

Layag-layag beach is a rising beach destination in Nasugbu. Located in Barangay Papaya, locals flock to the beach to douse the heat and unwind.

Layag-Layag Beach

You can pitch your tent here, go cliff jumping, snorkel, and watch the sunset.

Jump-off: Papaya, Nasugbu, Batangas

NASUGBU CHURCH

Being a catholic country, the Philippines is known for having dozens of churches. Nasugbu in Batangas is a home to a few of known churches, too.

San Antonio De Padua Parish Church

Compared to other churches in the province of Batangas, this church is relatively new.

San Antonio De Padua Parish Church

San Antonio De Padua Parish Church was founded last February 2, 2017 and the story behind its fast completion is what makes this parish even more special.

Location: Kaylaway Public Cemetery, Tagaytay - Nasugbu Hwy, Nasugbu

St. Francis Xavier Parish Church

The St. Francis Xavier Church may not be as old as other churches in the province, but it still reminds us of the Spanish era in this part of the Philippines. In the early 1850s, the townsfolk had a church built and dedicated it to St. Francis Xavier and the Nuestra Senora Virgen de le Escalera. This wooden church burned down.

St. Francis Xavier Parish Church

The present church was built in 1959 with Saint Francis Xavier as the principal patron and Nuestra SeƱora de la Escalera as their patroness. The image of the miraculous Lady of Stairway (SeƱora de la Escalera) was episcopally crowned on September 4, 2005.

Location: Nasugbu-Ternate Hi-way, Nasugbu Town Proper

Caleruega Church

Caleruega Church is one of the historical churches in Batangas. It is ideal for wedding ceremonies, retreats, recreation and it is also a great spot to get away from the bustling city, relax, enjoy, and reflect on one’s life.

The church is located on top of a hill in a quiet village in Nasugbu with an overlooking view of the mountains, rice fields, and the beautiful sunset. Going there will bring you closer not only to God but also to nature.
